Now that we are almost settled down here in Mastodon, let’s start talking about “Bruno” aka “privacy”. Since your data is in a particular server, your privacy depends on policies put in place there. That means that some users might be more protected than others. But at the same time, a data breach in one server does not affect the rest. I checked some servers privacy policies and it doesn’t look pretty. Some servers don’t have anything written. Just accounts of people that can access your data

Other servers are more explicit, but in general, there is no much information about what privacy regulations or law apply and how to exercise your rights. In the #fediverse we have decentralized the data, but also our privacy. It might be a more open, resilient way to admin a social network. However your privacy might end up depending on the good will and work of very different people.

@tiago I think privacy is an important issue and it can be done better here. Best way to make this a better platform is to put in place better policies.

I see a lot of posts in mastodon asking people to use the platform una given way: add this to your profile, add metadata on your posts, boost and like posts, include hashtags, etc. Why should people use the platform in a given way? RT was invented by people in Twitter. Maybe we should be less normative.

I made a (stupid 🙃) error on the daily growth of users on Twitter. Here is the correct Monday version of my plot. Mastodon is growing slower than Twitter but is catching up. I got caught up in the excitement 🤦♂️.

New data about the growth of the #fediverse. The number of new accounts is now on average around 100k per day after the peak in November 8th of 135k new users.

Understanding a little bit more about the #fediverse through data. Here is a plot of all #fediverse instances at instances.social as a function of their number of users and toots (statuses) and if they are open for new accounts. In general, instances are small in the number of users (median = 28). Interestingly, there are a lot of small, very active, and closed servers in the #fediverse. Also, some of the biggest servers are Japanese communities.

Some reports estimate that around 1M people have left #twitter in the last weeks https://www.technologyreview.com/2022/11/03/1062752/twitter-may-have-lost-more-than-a-million-users-since-elon-musk-took-over/. Twitter will disconnect thousands of microservices soon. Those microservices provide a lot of information about tweets. Some research analyses and models depend critically on them. For example, the phone model is used in many analyses or estimations of socio-economic statuses. Those changes in Twitter will dramatically impact #computationalsocialscience in the future
