https://world.huanqiu.com/article/9CaKrnK3P6vhttp://www.gov.cn/zhengce/content/2010-11/12/content_7911.htm

For my linguistic/sociolinguistic/social work folks there: How do you ask about someone's linguistic repertoire in a non offensive, non jargoning and non exclusive manner? I usually do "what languages do you speak" and then I had this interviewee who signs a sign language and I was like ahhhh sh*t how did I not take that into consideration :0b16:

because "what languages do you *use*" sounds weird & ambiguous doesn't it? (e.g. I used to use Cantonese but I'm no longer using it anymore am I still a canto user?)

@thor yeah i had a quick look up. it is the german ch sound when it's close to a front vowel (e.g. ich). a similar palatalisation process of the k sound actually happened in english as well, which is why there're shriek vs screech in english. the palatalisation of the g sound is also familiar: in English it's a "day" with an "ei" sound which came from an "aj" sound which shares the origin with the word in other germanic languages e.g. Tag in German with a "g" sound

@thor @bitterblossom not quite, this is the IPA symbol that represents a sound in any natural language, not a softened c in the Latin alphabet that can mean different things depending on the specific language’s orthography. Yes, you’re right that the ç in français make it a /s/ sound instead of normal /k/ sound when the letter c is followed by a in the French language. However, in IPA (international phonetic alphabet, not the beer), it represents a voiceless palatial fricative, which is the hissing sound you make when your tongue is placed near your palate (the hard part in the upper part of your mouth) but not touching it, and you make the air flow in the similar way when you make the /s/ sound. It is similar to the /j/ sound in “yes”, if your dialect/accent doesn’t realise the consonant y as the vowel /i/.
