Literal sword lesbians.(Sword given to Maréchal Joseph Joffre, former commander-in-chief of the French military, in 1919; representing friendship between Provence and Catalonia. From le musée de l'Armée in Paris.)

Putting "Zombie" on a Halloween playlist means you may as well add it to your Thanksgiving playlist too, because it's by The Cranberries.

I thought I was seeing an algorithmically delayed April Fool's Day post about Freddy Got Fingered being added to the Criterion Collection, but...The post just said "added to Criterion", so I looked it up and it turned out to mean "added to the streaming service" back in March as part of a block of programming honoring the Razzies:https://www.avclub.com/you-can-finally-watch-freddy-got-fingered-on-the-criter-1851263144

Though there was a small part of me thinking, you know what? Isn't that one of the few films Roger Ebert refused to give a rating to? Is it one of the ones he said he gave zero stars and he wished he didn't even have to give it that rating? Maybe that makes it a notable entry into film canon? Sure. Fine.

New favourite poutine topping: Grilled jalapenos. They just have a subtle heat that makes the gravy and cheese extra delicious.

In 2017, I was able to travel to see the total eclipse (Oregon isn't too far, it was summer and camping is cheap), and I'm a little disappointed that isn't a possibility this time. But I'm going to go get myself a pair of eclipse glasses so I can have a peek at the sun next Monday even though it's only expected to be 10% here. The subtle change in the light is still interesting.

Total eclipses get called a once in a lifetime experience. The suddenness of darkfall and how quickly the temperature dropped and how nearby birds stopped singing has stayed with me as a very deep, singular feeling.

This headline is sublime. The period after the first sentence, but not after the second, just leaves it hanging like the bees interrupted it.(Also, they had to break down a wall, and pulled out 100 pounds of honeycomb.)https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-68924955

This bee is nicknamed the "witch bee" because she lays eggs in discarded snail shells and uses tiny sticks to cover them up. When she's carrying them, it looks like she's flying on a broomstick.https://www.theguardian.com/media/2023/mar/26/witch-bee-riding-tiny-broomstick-to-feature-in-attenboroughs-wild-isles

Dreamed that I wanted a massage and that all RMTs had to declare their alignment and the only masseuse in my area was chaotic evil and I was not going to even ask what that entailed. My insurance only covered lawful evil massage, which involved a mallet and Clubhouse tenderizer powder, because technically people are meat.

Anyone else end up at a screening of Nosferatu where people were laughing at the end? The laughers nearest me sounded like they were laughing because they were uncomfortable (they weren't expecting that ending maybe?), but there were also a bunch of guys just roaring with genuine amusement when Thomas burst in.

I've been reading Neko Case's memoir (The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You) and I keep having to stop because her writing makes the beauty of everything she loves palpable, and then makes the trauma and neglect in her life hit hard to the guts.

I also felt gauche thinking in terms of "spoilers" when I wanted to talk about a particularly surprising event in the book, because I didn't want to ruin a pretty big part of the narrative that takes a while to unfold (and there's still more I haven't read yet). It felt gossipy and vulture-like and consumption-for-consumption's-sake to reduce a heads up about content to "Spoiler alert!" about a currently living person (even if they did share the story themselves).
