My book on nature inspired #optimization using #JuliaLang was written entirely using #orgmode in #Emacs with literate programming so that all of the code is automatically included in the book. See my profile for link to free version on the Web.

@worldsendless Writing code, for me, is a part of a much larger process that includes writing prose, project management, analysing and visualising data, and creating diagrams. I need a tool that seamlessly supports all these activities with minimal friction. #orgmode in #Emacs does the job brilliantly. And for email, #mastodon (of course), IRC, ...VS Code looks good for just one of these bits, from what I can see.

A really interesting blog post on rewriting #Emacs (well, the core of it that implements the bottom layer including an #elisp interpreter) in #rust. The one immediate attraction of such a re-implementation would be having proper multi-threading: no more waiting for #gnus to download emails from some slow server!https://coredumped.dev/2023/01/17/design-of-emacs-in-rust/

Native #Emacs app on Android on a Planet Computers Gemini phone which has a physical keyboard. Match made in heaven!

Playing a bit more with #Emacs on the Gemini: installing packages, including from #MELPA, getting rid of menu and tool bars, and changing the theme (to my own dark theme). Also read the info manual for the Android port so can now find files in e.g. the Downloads directory etc. enabling transfer to/from Emacs and other systems. Early days but fun! I look forward to new versions of this build of Emacs. 🙂

@JohnHughes Lovely photos. Cuenca is beautiful and the old town is a World Heritage Site. The bars are great and there are several that have balconies looking into one or the other gorge. The Parador (the old monastery) across the Huécar is very pleasant for drink or food. And crossing via the San Pablo bridge is an experience. #CuencaEsÚnica#spain #cuenca #springintoart #ayearforart #BuyIntoArt

@mitchmarq42xyz I'm old enough that I migrated from #vi, not #vim or any other variant. In any case, I didn't miss anything in particular initially but over the years I started to appreciate modal editing more and more so now I use #EvilMode in #Emacs. Best of both worlds. And I do actually prefer ex commands (e.g. :%s/xx/yy/g) to the equivalents from Emacs.

@galdor Sure... but it's #Lisp so we simply add what we want or need (and hence cl-lib).

@galdor For #Emacs #gnus, I ended up using #davmail as an intermediary to read email from an Exchanger server. Has worked and continues to work flawlessly.

@mms @sqrtminusone Yes, you can post replies via gwene. I do it all the time. The first time you try to post in a given group, you may get asked to authenticate your email address (you'll receive an email that you simply have to respond to) before the post actually gets delivered.#gnus #usenet

@worldsendless @freemo If you set `org-id-method` to `'ts`, it will use a recognisable form of timestamp for the path for attachments.

@worldsendless @freemo No, not at all as existing attachments continue to exist based on whatever ID naming scheme was in use at that time: it's just sub-directories and the actual attachments in those directoriess.

@worldsendless I have experienced laggy behaviour in exwm as well. There are two possible causes I have identified: using flyspell and having Firefox running too long without quitting (I tend to log in, start exwm, and not shut down for weeks or months). I do not understand why either of those "tools" would cause the lagginess, mind you.

@worldsendless for me, also being able to manage **all** windows and buffers through Emacs commands. So much easier to handle, say, 30+ buffers than in any other window manager (including the tiling ones).

@louis Very nice post. One question: anybody know what the `nil-blank-string` symbol referenced in the `auto-complete-at-point` function might be?

@mms There's a good blog post on narrowing/widening with some useful code by Artur Malabarba. I use some of that code daily. Narrowing & widening are excellent possibly under-appreciated aspects of buffer management in #Emacs!http://endlessparentheses.com/emacs-narrow-or-widen-dwim.html

I love this quote from https://steve-yegge.blogspot.com/2007/01/pinocchio-problem.html:"Emacs can be thought of as the ultimate command shell: what happens when command shells are taken to their logical extreme, or at least as far as anyone has taken the idea to date."Written 16+ years ago now but still true.#Emacs
