One of my bachelor's degrees is in political science. This led to problems when I was getting my MBA and had to take a political economics class. We were tasked with writing a paper - something about the impact of human rights advances on global economics.Given I had a polysci degree and was writing a paper for a couple of polysci professors, I relied on common polysci knowledge in some of my arguments.I got an F and a "see me."They accused me of plagiarism. I didn't cite sources.

I contested the accusation. I was referencing common knowledge - literally a well-known human rights theory I'd both specialized in during undergrad and which my new professor had referenced many times during lectures. The university agreed I didn't need to cite common knowledge. They changed my F to an A. But the entire experience still scarred me. It was horrifying to see that grade along with the possibility of being expelled for academic dishonesty.

Sadly, it wasn't the first time ...In college I knew nothing about computers or data security. I had an older laptop and no printer - so I shared my HDD on the network in order to print essays from the computer lab. This led to some weird shenanigans.Apparently I hosted an anti-establishment bulletin board for a couple of years. Someone used my machine to seed a torrent. And another student beat me to turning in an essay. I was accused of plagiarism when mine was flagged as a duplicate.

I contested the accusation and, thanks to my demonstrable incompetence with computers, was cleared of wrongdoing (and the other student expelled both for dishonesty and for computer misuse).Still, it scarred me. It's why I refused to study computer science in school and kept away from tech jobs for so long ...These are both stories that illustrate how easy it is even for humans to get it wrong with identifying plagiarism. And in 2023, it's not just humans we need to contend with.

I've submitted essays to TurnItIn since high school. Frankly, I'm surprised they're still around (yes, I'm old). But that their scanner is misidentifying essays as being written by AI is no surprise.ChatGPT and the like have been trained on literal _years_ of essays and other writings available on the internet. That's why they're so convincing - they feel like real writing.https://twitter.com/rustykitty_/status/1709316764868153537When neither humans no machines can tell the difference, we have a problem.

Layoffs should not be the norm.Intentional performance management should avert any personnel issues related to poor performance on a proactive basis. Absent any market-level existential changes impacting an organization, layoffs are indicative of failed management.

@finlaydag33k Different mistake. But still failed management. Demonstrates that they didn't think through contingency plans and, as a result of their mistake, other people suffer.

Tried signing up for a ResearchGate account. They rejected me. Because I haven't published, don't work for an educational institution, and am not a formal student in higher education. The gatekeeping here is stupid.

Didn't believe this was a thing until I actually saw it myself.I bank at a small, local credit union. I recently cleared my autocomplete settings so plugged their name into #Google to get back to their homepage. The Sponsored result IS NOT my bank's website. But is skinned the same. 100% a #phishing site served as a Google ad above the legitimate business website. This is a major problem, my friends.

The site's redirect loop appears skinned just like the bank's site. But if you remove the additional query parameters you get a bogus Ameriglass website instead.

Using `git rebase -i HEAD~11` to reorder then squash my commits into just 2 with really comprehensive commit messages always makes me feel like a bit of a cheater.Yeah, I know 8 of those commits were just "WIP I don't know why it's broken yet ..." But to everyone else it looks like I have a logical, well-planned approach to building my code.

Spent an hour tonight making pizza from scratch. The house smells amazing and the kids were excited. So obviously I had to burn my hand and flip it onto the floor as I took it out of the oven. :-(Hot dogs for dinner...

Anyone know what kind of tool tightens this nut? It's on the play structure where my kids play, except it's loose. I contacted the city in July and they've done nothing. So I want to fix it to keep my kids safe...Thumb for scale

This is my first Starbucks drip coffee in years. I forgot how awful it really is.The best thing about 2020 forcing us all to work from home (and using my own machines for both drip and lattes) is that my taste in beans has definitely changed.I'm so sorry for those who think this is the best coffee can be 😞
