Omg, pkg removed git because the latest set of packages doesn't have git which of course makes things more difficult now that portsnap has been removed.I didn't read closely what was being removed because I didn't think that FreeBSD would deploy a set of packages that doesn't have such a fundamental package.Just learning again that arm64 packages are a shit show.#FreeBSD

Wtf happened to the FreeBSD ports tree? I can't just make install -j8 a port anymore. It just breaks or throws up dialogs asking to be configured. Even setting BATCH doesn't make those dialog prompts go away.If -j 8 breaks the ports tree so badly, why doesn't the mk infrastructure error out when present? And forcing a single threaded build is just painful.

The ai companies keep arguing that the law needs to change, but that's like a burglar arguing that the prison sentences are too long, because if they steal 1000s of items, They'll go away to prison for the rest of their life.We need to keep these damages because we need to reign in corporate exploitation.> https://mastodon.social/users/Richard_Littler/statuses/115101118350063381

@aralThe hilarious part was that this WAS a browser feature, dnt, but the industry didn't like that everyone enabled DNT so they refused to use it and use cookie pop ups instead. He doesn't even know that basic history either.

Reason why preferred names are important: Me has a cis-het white man still don't get called by my name, John-Mark, at Drs appointments and other similar places. They like to drop the Mark and call me John, despite the hyphen, and John not being my name.

Omg, this is going to be terrible for society. We already have a generation of white men who think that their own failings are because of others, but now this is going to be reinforced more and likely at a younger age because white parents can't be bothered to raise their children.> https://m.ai6yr.org/users/conejoclint/statuses/115305068539773644

Every time I try to use an LLM, it always gets things terribly wrong. Nvlist binary format is undocumented. Ask an LLM for it and of course it gets confused with OpenZFS similarly named nvpair, and talks about that (don't know if it's correct or not, but probably isn't from what I briefly saw).I really don't understand how anyone uses this stuff for work.

@fooneHave you tried printing slower?I think I found that different filaments take a different amount of energy to heat up. So a speed that works for one filament might not work for another. Increasing the temp only ensures that it starts out ok, but doesn't ensure that it stays at temp. (I never did test this theory by monitoring the hot end temp as it printed.)Have you tried slowing down the print speed?

This is so true. The number of hours I spent programming and learning about computers before I even graduated high school is very high. With the various projects I did, at least 5k if not 10k+.Started with apple ][ basic, a little TI basic, then progressed to qbasic. Before I started high school I moved on to C and C++. This doesn't include the time I spent running a BBS. In high school I started learning and working with FreeBSD.and of course this doesn't include the time outside of work that I spend working on my personal projects.> https://mastodon.social/users/AstroHyde/statuses/115440878909818095

Thinking about how it'd be possible to compress strings in the FreeBSD kernel. There are lots of strings that are rarely used, and also, they would compress very well. They are usually ASCII and have lots of similarities (e.g. starting with "%s :", or all the printf format specifications). The difficulty is how to make it happen and have the decompression happen transparently with minimal overhead and impact.

Does anyone have a complete guide to how vnodes and vnode paging works on FreeBSD?D&I doesn't tie things together very nicely, and the man pages are lacking a lot of the interplay between the vnops and what various functions do.I'm getting closer to understanding things, but it seems like there's a lot of interplay between _read, _bmap, _read_pgcacche, _getpages, and _strategy, and helper functions like bread/cluster_read that isn't well described (or split between all the different man pages in ways that aren't obvious to me).#FreeBSD

Working on the 15.0-R torrents now. I thought I had set up notifications to my phone on release, but apparently they didn't work. Should have them out in an hour.

If I do a search for nvi. I fucking mean nvi. I don't mean neivim or vim. Neither of those are [fully] compatible with nvi and so are not helpful for my search.Thankfully I can minus them out but if a search engine was competent, I wouldn't need to.
