@neil bit like a Bechdel test for social networks? If two users talk to each other about something other than the network they are talking on, then it passes the test?

@mansr @neil If I had to summarise what I mainly use my 3D printer for, I'd have to say a) printing little plastic doodads to replace broken bits of plastic, like battery doors or thumbstick covers and b) making accidental plastic spaghetti out of poorly-printed little replacement doodads :)

@stux One option, if one is sick of one's private jet being identified, is simply not to own a private jet. Reminds me of walking around the yacht marina in Antibes and seeing all the sniffy posh owners looking askance at one. If the eyeballs of hoi polloi following your pretentious flying/floating toy is such an issue you could just... not. It's surprisingly easy to not own your own jet, as it turns out.

@simon This concept is so annoyingly postmodernist that it probably counts as retro. Wonder if it can be said to achieve the level of parody, in the sense of 'humorously exaggerated imitation'. The flickeriness/repetitive nature of the video is odd, likewise the blurriness around the mouth when speaking. They seem to have more or less got Linus's voice though.

@TedUnderwood To me the "snobs vs plebs" stuff is a bit unhelpful (also evokes Tory rhetoric, but hey). Good, effective communication and expectation management around products is important regardless of the specific capabilities of the product or the specific intended audience. Misleading marketing is generally bad regardless of whether it applies to bath crystals or smoothies or chatbots. Also, on which note, the alien metaphor? Argh, no.

@stux Hah, reminds me of one time visiting a family member when they complained about their television having a wonderful screen but terrible audio. Turned out the TV was sold with plastic wrap over the speakers that you were supposed to remove along with the rest of the packaging. They'd had the TV for years. Conclusion: manufacturers sometimes don't do the best job providing, er, unboxing instructions :D

@bougiekitty @sysop408 Wonder how long it'll be until there's a shock reveal in which it turns out that what's left of the Twitter tech team is trialling a 'replacement' that, on inspection, turns out to be a Mastodon fork *cough that sounds like Troof Social*

Please everybody stop overegging chatgpt, please please. Overheard in a presentation today: "Chatgpt solves 80% of all questions"... closely followed with a remark that "all of the references it gave to support its conclusions were made up... but still very impressive..."

@stux @SharG I hope the search is in large part motivated by an intention to point out the price tag, and hence to force regulation in future. The media attention is another thing. It's maybe understandable insofar as the story works well as a fable (message: not even the very rich are exempt from capitalism's worst tendencies). In stories about people doing desperate things while in genuine need, we're arguably the a**holes. Making readers feel like a**holes probably doesn't sell papers.

@stux I see how someone could fall into the trap of writing it, but how it would survive long enough to be pushed to prod is a whole different wtf :)

@Wolven My organisation recently came up with a blanket ban on BYOD Macs on the basis that they're too dangerous to be allowed (for some unspecified reason). I look forward to them banning Windows 11 across the board on the strength of this frankly far more egregious concern, obvs.

@paul_ipv6 @futurebird The big one for me is: how does the paper respond to fountain pen ink (which I often use to draw in) :)

@paul_ipv6 @futurebird I don't have answers, other than noting that Rhodia paper seems to be very good for the price (but then, Rhodia is Clairefontaine which is on the French/German boundary, and I buy it in France, so I'm probably not seeing the export price which I'm sure is hugely inflated!) Hot press Arches paper is generally amazing in my experience (in fact... Arches in general tbf) but it's sooo expensive *weeps*.

@futurebird @paul_ipv6 me neither. I took a course on botanical illustration recently and because it's about trying to reproduce what you see as accurately as possible, hot press is perfect, cold press is absolutely not the thing at all. I recognise cold press has a place, but it's not currently my thing :)
