Rephrasing a question I just asked in a thread:It looks like "hallucination" can mean different things in #AI research. I thought it only referred to random quirks in training data being taken as generalizable truth, but I guess it's more than that.So I'm searching for sources on the different meanings of hallucination/hallucinate in #artificialintelligence / #machinelearning / #datascience - will add the #ChatGPT tag for post visibility (and because #LLM hallucinations are v interesting)

@TedUnderwood Thank you! I'm not sure about the history of DeepDream — Wikipedia says it was released ion 2014, and this paper from 2012 discusses machine learning "hallucinations" :https://sites.astro.caltech.edu/~george/ay122/cacm12.pdf — could be that "hallucination" came from the research that led to DeepDream?

@malteengeler another problem is that we don't consist of or comprise data. "Personal data" is at least as much the product of the exogenous systems that construct it as it is "ours." The idea of paying individuals for "their" data reinforces the idea that there's some kind of natural continuum between us and data, which is very convenient for digital capitalism.

@malteengeler This is an interesting question. It implicates the mind/body problem. I think for the practical purpose of functioning normally in modern life, we need to see the self as manifest—ie, as a "thing" (body, companion, etc.), that is datafiable at least to some extent, even beyond capital's mechanisms of capture. And that view is useful for understanding the object of exploitation... [1/n] (your post made me think a lot)...

@malteengeler The process of digitization under data-driven neoliberal capitalism simultaneously breaks down and reinforces divisions between the self and everything beyond it. Its premise is that everything is digitizable, which implies a radical unity—to the point of indistinction—between the immaterial and material. For that reason, I see the wisdom in identifying one's "data body" as a unique type of thing that can be exploited...[2/n]

@malteengeler ... in other words, if we disambiguate the data body from other kinds of "bodies" we identify with, we might better understand specific ways in which digital capitalism exploits us.But, at the same time, digital capitalism functions by distinguishing people from each other, especially through identity categories. It suggests that the world only has one type of "natural" feature, which is the categories it uses to sort and separate people. [3/n]

@malteengeler E.g., a typical demographic category (gender, race, etc.), or a "consumer interested in this product" type of category, or another effective labeling tool. I'm concerned that if we identify a "data body" that has an existence independent of these mechanisms, we risk reifying these labels. TL;DR it's complicated.btw, a lot of these thoughts are inspired by Matteo Pasquinelli's work on operaismo, Franco Berardi (The Soul at Work), and Eugene Thacker (The Global Genome).[4/4]

... mostly I'm focused on digital epistemic realism, emphasizing the ways in which machine learning programs optimize for “accuracy” by matching outputs to inputs. They're not oriented towards truth and falsehood as conventionally understood within and beyond the study of epistemology — I've posted about that here before, the sleight-of-hand by which "logically valid" becomes a stand-in for "true" and "meaningful."( I will put some hashtags here: #philosophy #AI #capitalism )(4/n)

I also think of this "techno-capitalist realism" as a cultural effect. I hope to take the Fisherian approach of analyzing cultural artifacts for their ideological work to show how the “internal” processes and “external” effects and attributes of computation mirror one another. And, again, result in a sort of cultural logic of digital fatalism.(5/n)

I say "I hope" because this is all very tentative, and I've got a lot on my hands with teaching and academic service, so who knows when this project will turn into anything more than notes written in stolen moments. I was really happy to read Horning's post, at any rate, it made me feel a bit less alone in my largely extremely private thinking/writing world.Link: https://robhorning.substack.com/p/the-preponderance-of-the-object(6/6)

RIP David Golumbia. I've posted this here before. It's one of the best commentaries on tech and society I could think to share with anyone. I know his work will keep inspiring people. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4pmXl4RCcE
