The essential point of this article applies equally to most music equipment reviews. https://hackaday.com/2023/03/28/its-difficult-to-read-an-audiophile-guide-as-an-analogue-engineer/"reviewers return positive assessments as a matter of course to maintain relationships with manufacturers ... they do so to maintain the hefty sums those manufacturers spend on advertising in their publications."

I've now run through six calibrations of the SoundID Reference software. One interesting note: there's a clear dip and then a peak in the bass response in all these calibrations, but the frequency of these deviations shifts upwards by 5 to 10 Hz if the room door is closed.Listening to a range of music with these calibrations (the last is the best) is quite revealing. Some recordings sound even better. Others sound unexpectedly lacklustre, including some I've always rated.

I wrote my Fedivision entry last Tuesday and recorded a rough demo with electric guitar and vocal.Last Wednesday I inserted an extra eight bars to make the instrumental break worthwhile. On Thursday, against all odds, I managed to record what will mostly be the final vocals. Then we went away for a four day weekend.Today I recorded the bass, finished the drums, and recorded half the instrumental. It's coming along well, considering that this year I'm singing it myself.

Today I did indeed rerecord all the vocals, edited and comped them even. Much better.I also recorded a guitar track, and the overall texture is about what I want, I think.Next I'll rerecord the piano so it fits nicely with the guitar. Some further harmonies then seem indicated, after which there's just the instrumental to complete.

And today ... or more accurately now, yesterday ... I rerecorded the piano and additional harmonies for my 2024 Fedivision entry as threatened.I also applied a little additional tuning to the lead vocal, started balancing tracks with a mix in mind, and began strategically removing some instruments from parts of the song to provide light and shade.I still have the instrumental break to complete, but I have a fair idea where I'm going with that.

Today in my pursuit of a Fedivsion 2024 entry:I created the instrumental break, and used the same instruments over what will be the fade out.I tweaked the mix a little, widening the drum kit, monoing the bass, lifting the vocals.I spent time finessing the reverbs on instruments and voices.I listened to the results several times end to end on headphones. This is usually a positive sign.Tomorrow I'll start the mix -> master -> rinse-and-repeat cycle, deo volente.

So today. Limited time.I again put effort into reverb on vocal, harmony and instrumental tracks. Listened on the mono Avantone Mixcube at very low volume, resulting in level changes to the very tracks whose reverbs I'd just tweaked.Rendered the mix. Created a new project to master it. Was surprised to find the mix is already running at -13.3 LUFS because I had no processing on the master bus, and relatively little compression on individual buses.Spat out an MP3 to review.

There are rabbit holes within rabbit holes.Today I pitch corrected the harmonies. Tedious. But it made a surprising difference even though they weren't bad to start with.I changed one of the instruments in the instrumental break.More finessing reverb. If I explained what I was doing, Richard would call this "fucking with spiders".And finally a preliminary run through the mastering chain and an MP3 I can listen to elsewhere.I have a country name for my entry now too.

Putting this one to bed now, because this afternoon I submitted my Fedivision 2024 entry. Before hitting the button I made further small tweaks to vocal levels and had a decent burn-out on the mastering circuit. That's it for this year, then. On to something else.

Today in the studio I =think= I finished mixing the first single for the second sideSister album, pending Aelyth's approval. And I started work on another of the uptempo songs, re-recording the multi-tracked guitar lines for the verses (heaven only knows how we'd do those live). I can see I'll need to re-record at least part of the bass line as well. This song was only hurriedly framed up to track Aelyth's vocals, so it's a bit loose.

The article above (thank you @mirlo) describes HarmonyCloak, a technique for adding inaudible noise to recorded music to prevent artificial intelligence from using it.https://mosis.eecs.utk.edu/harmonycloak.htmlMy questions are:[1] Is this a proprietary product we will have to licence?[2] Will it result in an escalating war where large language models figure out how to ignore the added noise, leading to new (and possibly more invasive) noise algorithms?

I'm not sure this is new, but Bandcamp has officially banned music created "wholly or in substantial part" with artificial intelligence.https://old.reddit.com/r/BandCamp/comments/1qbw8ba/ai_generated_music_on_bandcamp/'If you encounter music or audio that appears to be made entirely or with heavy reliance on generative AI, please use our reporting tools to flag the content for review by our team.
