This morning I attended the first #JohnnyDecimal Zoom webinar. It was great to learn more about how to implement this system, and to see real people from around the world who are on the same journey! @johnnydecimal Buy the J.D workbook if you want to join us next time! https://johnnydecimal.com/10-19-concepts/14-build-your-system/14.02-the-decimal-workbook/ #productivity

I keep thinking about making a personal #website independent from corporations like Medium and Substack.People are doing this for free via services like Netlify, but I'm wondering if that's sustainable? Is paid #hosting more reliable, and if so, what's a reasonable price to expect to pay per month/year?I don't have a tech background, so the back end of things isn't where I want to play. Wordpress is ubiquitous and blends nicely with Activity Pub, but I've heard it can get complicated.Feeling drawn to #Obsidian Publish as a personal website, because I'm very comfortable working with #Markdown files. Not looking to get fancy, just want to put text and images online and link them nicely together.Does anyone know if you can put ALT text on images in Obsidian Publish? I couldn't find any info on it. It's easier than ever to watch the box these days, that's for sure. I'll be watching with interest as my youngest two start their own families, because their older sisters have continued the tradition, and don't have any TVs at all in their places. When they want to watch something it's as a family, on a laptop or via a projector on the wall. Their kids would rather build Lego than watch TV, which I love.

@nicole @ddonnell @jarango Great topic! I'm looking forward to it. An emerging school of thought has the placing of basic metadata in file names. For me there are layers of information that can be used to classify a file, and the name is the most basic of these. Johnny.Decimal works well here.I see it in this order:1. File name2. File location (folder/subfolder)3. Tags4. Properties (YAML)

Has anyone used Brizy Cloud for #blogging? I bought a lifetime deal to a hosted Brizy Cloud site a few years ago, and am wondering if it would be worth the trouble of moving everything across.Other than that, thus far Micro.blog and Buttondown look like my best options. I'm leaning toward Buttondown because of the integrated optional payments, which would give those who are willing the opportunity to help me pay for the subscription fee.

@nicole @apolaine Sounds good! I opened a feature request today on their GitHub re making Buttondown ActivityPub compatible, and heard this back from Justin: “Definitely want to do this. My main blocker is lack of knowledge/literature; I think I need a better mental model of what "publishing" is in this context.”Promising!

Apparently there is no word for people who choose not to swear, similar to teetotaller for people who choose not to drink alcohol. The robot in my browser suggests that verbotonist (verbal abstainer) or profanon (profanity, non) could do the trick.“Sorry, I won't be reading that paragraph aloud—I'm a practicing profanonist.”So, am I completely alone in this? Do you swear, or use cute little euphemisms? (Ironically, my kids used to say, “What the mammoth?!”)

@lextenebris @rmateu I'd like a metadata option to indicate what should make it into the feed.

Your notes are a form of personal currency.Leaving these notes in an #app that doesn't give you control over your data is like leaving money—that's not backed by precious metals—in the bank. Both could be frozen, or disappear, at any moment. No, that's not scaremongering. If you think locked-in notes data and #CBDC sound awesome, I'd invite you to explore the definition of true #freedom. If you must use a locked-in app, you'd better have a robust #backup system in place. #obsidian

Here's a map of Adelaide, South Australia, to keep you occupied while waiting for a friend in the women's loos at Adelaide airport, as I was last week. Overlaid is a picture of Nancy Bird Walton, the youngest Australian woman to gain a pilot's license. It was the 1930s, and she was 19. #Australia #Adelaide #aviation #women @mappery

This week: the plain text enthusiasts and simple tool users who inspired my productivity journey, plus thoughts on what makes a tool stack work.“Good tools support and augment existing skills, they don't create them. @publicvoit Excellent advice, as usual.I think the main concept on which we would cross swords is the that of what makes a tool or a method "good" or "bad" for particular use cases.Org, tags, etc.All the evidence in the world may point to a certain solution for someone's needs, but if they can't live with it for psychological or emotional reasons, it isn't right for them. Not right then, anyway.

Note to self: when you think you’ve dropped your pen between two lounge chairs and a quick look shows something dark in the shadows, do NOT reach your hand down there to pick it up!Fortunately for my nerves it was a dead huntsman, but it was a major creep out nonetheless. Could have been worse, right? We’ve had funnelwebs in the house before. #arachnids #arachnophobia #spiders #straya #australia

@mpmilestogo Are they poisonous? I have a strange fascination with deadly creeping things, and somehow am not as afraid of them as I am of those that are harmless!
