I yearn for a world where being trans is the most boring thing. Where it means nothing more than oh yes I'm a girl and I don't like me beard, so after my daily share of carework for the solarpunk anarchocommune I want a round at the laser machine in the socialist library of things, who even cares.I wish we lived in a world where meeting a trans person didn't feel like finding a veteran of the same traumatising war, sad eyes that say "I get it", but alas.

we have a fortunes-off file so you can print offensive quotes at login time. No distro I know of comes with a fortunes-supportive file that lists encouraging, calming quotes. You can make sudo(8) insult users when they type their passwords wrong ("Defaults insults" in sudoers). There's no option to make sudo be gentle and understanding when you mistype.I grew up in free software circles and only really learned any emotional skills after growing out of them.

When my lil dictionary is updating the db, it shows a minimal ascii animation of a steaming coffee mug, and goes like ‘X, done… Y, done… All done! $0 is ready to use, enjoy!’ In modern computers this doesn’t even take time anymore, but this little detail is by far what I got most praise on it (2nd most praised is the fact that it’s ‘pretty’, that I took care with colours and Unicode etc. in a cmdline app).more cuteness and gentleness in sofware pls#linux #foss

@flop yass fish good!! the featureset is actually elegant and powerful, it’s so refreshing coming from bash/zsh, but the fact that it makes a deliberate effort to be friendly and welcoming is what sets it apart for me. (also pretty!) things like sane powerful defaults and readable consistent syntax seem like no-brainers nowadays, but cp. to bash; they make a lot of difference to new users, & if nobody new is learning to use shells where will the command-line be?#fishShell

It’s a shame that the only decent command-line we have is the Linux/Unix ecosystem. There are reasons it is the way it is, mostly the fact that most hobbyist devs are programmers/engineers (way too few designers, writers, sensibility readers etc., & the precious ones we have get too little respect). But a cmdline could be all of: - fully i18n - discoverable - consistent - documented - cute& the fact that ours isn’t is taken to be an essential limitation of cmdlines…

@cantinto short for "internationalisation" (there's 18 letters between the other 2).There’s no technical reason why a command-line would require ppl to learn English to use it; why using characters not from English feels like taking a risk (and Unicode astral planes, like extreme sports); why it’s so hard to setup input to multiple languages; why column align code messes up if you use Asian full-width chars… it’s just ethnocentric, colonial values embodied in software.

@cantinto For recent examples that happened to me: Wayland breaks user-level custom keyboard settings (e.g. from xmodmap(1) ) – silently, your settings just stop working – without substituting it for anything else (last time I looked at least).kitty(1) breaks non-English language input. in github the dev was super blunt and said kitty will never have it, use something else.coding this stuff is work, but when they’re unwilling to take patches…

(also pretty!) things like all features ready out-of-the-box, or readable consistent syntax, seem like obvious nowadays, but cp. to bash; they make a lot of difference to new users, & if nobody new is learning to use shells where will the command-line be?#fishShell

@tobbsn @flop :lazer_Y: :lazer_E: :lazer_S: :blobrainbow: we unfortunately live in a world where bash is the standard (for now :owobread: ) , so there's no way around that. but if I was going to teach beginners the command-line, I'd start on fish, get them a firm footing, then at some point have a discussion about other shells (good point to talk about diversity in linux, pros & cons) and show how to install fish when u get a system with bash.

the #ASL word for "trans" is the same morpheme as "beautiful" but signed over your heart, where you'd sign self 😭 (image/caption: via carodoodles on birdsite: https://twitter.com/carodoodles/status/1112803368819478529 )

"You ask any Marxist about labor and labor-value, they always immediately go to production. Well, here’s a cup. Somebody has to make the cup, it’s true. But we make a cup once, and we wash it ten thousand times, right? That labor just disappears in most of these accounts. Most work isn’t about producing things, it’s about keeping them the same, it’s about maintaining them, taking care of them, but also taking care of people, taking care of plants and animals."

I'm a lifelong fan of warm, indirect, dim lighting; I find it cozy, and my eyes hurt easily with strong light. So this room has some pretty weak lamps in the ceiling, well covered. That's terrible for selfies and video calls tho, especially now that the sun is dead and there's no more daylight in these strange lands. So I got a desk-clamp lamp, put a 1500lumen warm LED on it, reflected on the wall, and……turns out I feel better turning it on?? :surprised_pikachu:

@vyr "the only colours that I need are the pink and the black~"I keep going back to Eli Erlick’s motto, that trans bodies should be an opportunity for fashion. Thigh-highs actually high to my thighs are rare, and the few I find keep slipping off my thicc shapes. How to achieve optimum zettai ryōiki ratio in these conditions? How to make it ~better~ ? :>(suggestion @akai–chan 💋)

what we answer: "The exam will be about the contents we've seen during class."what it means: "We have no idea what will end up in the exam, we haven't even started to design it yet"

Japanese people go naked together in public baths as a form of bonding. when you’re a fieldworker, getting invited into onsen is a sign you’re doing things right.you can’t go into onsen with a trans body tho. on my first round of research, pre-HRT, I went to some nice sentō, but from then on I had to refuse it with excuses.this is such a specific, such a pointed experience that there’s a videogame about it.https://npckc.itch.io/one-night-hot-springs
