@owl @shahaan @matt how many cryptocurrencies have been “planning to switch” for years now? And how many will still be “planning to switch” 5 years from now? I don’t see how this claim addresses any concern until they actually back it up with action.

I'm switching the #SFFBookClub polls to within-mastodon, because Doodle doesn't seem to support polls that aren't tied to calendars any more. This will be open for exactly a week, and has 3 carried forward from previous months and a new one suggested by alx: https://weirder.earth/@alx/107323854256547176

Hello new people! We have a very informal sci-fi/fantasy book club here on the fediverse, and all are welcome to join us. All you have to do is:1) Look at #SFFBookClub2) Vote in the poll (see the toot this is a reply to) if you have an opinion about which book we'll read next month3) Read!4) Share your thoughts with the hashtag, and with CWs saying how far into the book you're discussing if your toot contains any spoilers.https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1UW-L9gSLjk8cNaMviI3veGv7ScQa4eEcA5sFeZd7fJM lists previous books.

With 50% of the votes, the May #SFFBookClub pick is Terminal Boredom, by Izumi Suzuki. A little more info about it and a link to the publisher's page: https://weirder.earth/@alx/107323854256547176

NB: I am not a current moderator of any instance, please do not take this as my instance's Official Policy, etc etc. When I first joined Mastodon, I was hesitant about instance blocks, feeling that they should be reserved only for the worst instances that wore swastikas on their sleeves. Over the years I've changed my stance significantly, because of what I've learned about the practicalities of moderation (1/?)

@msh We definitely put these in as food, but I'm very much enjoying this aspect of them.

@Rasp @swift I got a months-late reply from a friend last week which started with the words "What even is time?", and when I get around to replying to them I'll have to let them know that I'm now copying that for all of mine.

@msh We kept a big unkempt rosemary from the previous owners of this house. Today it is covered in blue flowers and small iridescent bees. I'm not quite munching on it on the way into the house, but stopping to watch for a while is an absolute joy.

WTF is up with a mastodon instance listing specific countries you're supposed to be in to use it? https://www.mastodon.green/countries/Double WTF for listing the English language skills of the population as one of the criteria for choosing countries for the blessed list.

@xerz Almost all of Africa & Asia too. I think the policy that would really reflect their intent would be an IP ban on new account requests, because when Pierre goes on safari in Kenya they probably do want him to be able to share his photos of the colourful natives. But I bet in reality it's more like Facebook's "real names" bullshit, in that a user who appears to live outside the Blesséd Zone is just at risk of getting banned if someone complains.

I'm eldang on cohost too. To be honest I have as yet to see anything really compelling about it, but until I find the Perfect Social Network I'll always be interested in new attempts. The financial model is interesting, but I have concerns about switching one monolotihic company-run moderation policy for another. And I get the sinking feeling when I read the staff account that they haven't actually used Mastodon and its forks... but that can't be true, can it?

Following a conversation between two friends yesterday (being vague because I can’t remember if it was a locked thread or not): I’ve rented a giant car for the next couple of weeks to take a big family group around Vancouver Island. We actually need all the interior space and it’s letting use one fewer car than if we were limited to what I’d normally consider sensible sized vehicles. But I hate the exterior hugeness of it. (1/?)

Look, all of us who hold relative privilege need to accept that we're not always going to see bigoted bullying firsthand, precisely because we're not its targets. We're also not always going to see the victims complaining, because complaining publicly attracts so much more abuse that people often choose not to. This means that if we want to help make a space safe for people more likely to be targeted than ourselves, we have to listen to listen to quiet warnings and watch for red flags.

I grew up in Britain. There are definitely many things about the place that seem less strange to me than they do to people who didn't. But I am entirely at a loss to understand why people are queueing for literal miles--right now as far as I can run in half an hour--to shuffle past a coffin for 3 minutes.

When Muscovites had to queue for hours for food in the 80s it was derided as the failure of a system. Well, why is Britain's supply of dead monarchs so constrained that people have to queue across London for one?
