My view of the conversations around the Rust Foundation's draft Trademark Policy is:- most people don't know how TM law works- some people seem to believe there's a "Rust Foundation co." swimming in cash twisting mustaches trying to be evil- a lot of people seem to believe that the draft was meant to be a "final comment" process when it was instead a "first public draft"- some people have a vested interest in taking the most outrageous interpretation of the draft- the draft needs more work

The main issue I see is that people that feel invested in the Rust project are 1) not lawyers (legalese is a different language that you have to learn to read) and 2) used to an open process where comments can be publicly made available.

You can have a PR with any drive by comment from anyone who cares to pay attention. If changes are quickly needed, they can "just be done" by the original author or another contributor. Legal documents don't work that way. You can't have a globally editable document that anyone can modify (small changes in wording can have huge consequences, in isolation or when interacting with other sentences). You have to have a lawyer in the loop.

I'm super disappointed on how a small, loud group of people have been abusive towards individuals in this conversation, particularly those that are upset at willful misreadings of the draft. I disagree with parts of the policy, but yelling at people that they aren't listening at the community, when this is precisely to gather feedback, feels incredibly discouraging and honestly makes me want to walk away, and I am not even in the receiving end. Can't imagine how those who are are feeling.

"You can say 'all are welcome,' but if wolves and sheep are both welcome then you're only going to get wolves. The the smart sheep will go somewhere else and the naive sheep will be eaten and processed. [...] Refusing to choose is a choice. It's a choice in favor of the people who prey on others and who refuse to acknowledge the humanity of those they hate."

@cliffle virtuous feedbacks beget vituous feedbacks. People expect more, so they simultaneously demand and give more. I hope that it continues spreading to more and more places.

Out of curiosity, I did a quick check to see how many `impl Trait` return types are object safe in the rustc codebase, meaning they could always be turned into a type-erased `Box<dyn Trait>`, and the ratio of object-safe/not object-safe is ~10:1.I don't know what that tells us, but found it interesting.I wonder what the performance impact in compile times and the produced binaries of turning these into trait objects automatically and transparently.#RustLang #rust

This seems to be in the same "neighborhood" as "polymorphization" (turning functions with type parameters into functions that take trait objects without developer action when it would not affect runtime performance, improving compile times by avoiding monomorphization and reducing generated code).

@foone wouldn't focus and vibration be mitigated by fast shower speed and high f stop? Then what you need is either high ISO or a lot of light. Alternatively you could see if you can automate your set up to use focus stacking for the different planes.

@foone there are some cheap used DSLRs with autofocus that might be easy to drive for this purpose, cheaper than a new cheap camera.

@jwz non-cyclists that are confused by activism think that activists are attracted to cycling, when the reality is that becoming a cyclist very quickly radicalizes one into becoming an activist. Nothing crystallizes strong opinions as being frequently threatened with death by at best indifferent and at worst aggressive and antagonistic people.
