@futurebird I don't want to sound too over-the-top, here, but this sounds like one of those Super-Hero Families: like the Incredibles or the Fantastic Four 😉

@foone Is there any chance you know how to accomplish this in Linux? I looked into it once (had a laptop with a busted keyboard that would spam key-presses without being touched), but couldn't figure out how to disable it

@foone that's the way the OpenWRT One routers work: plug USB-C cable in from laptop and open up screen /dev/ttyX 115200I'd done something similar with physical wires/UART on an esp8266; but the singular USB cable, direct from laptop to machine port, was a much nicer experience 😜

@futurebird I have absolutely "surfed" a subway car while not holding on to anything 👍

@futurebird the thing I do, to address this use case (not fully, but pretty well, I've found), using built-in features, is to create lists of people I follow who match certain conditions. Usually, I read my home feed; but I have a list of "priority" follows, and a list of "slow-posting" follows: a small set of people whose posts I want to guarantee I see, and a small group (they have to be small for this to work really well) who posts infrequently. Then I can go look at the posts in each of these lists individually, and they're easy to stay on top of. I'm a strong advocate of introducing user-defined filtering, too, though.

@futurebird one thing I've always appreciated in the intersection between coding and computer-science/mathematics is, when you can use a naïve approach initially, to get answers fast; but then have to switch to a more sophisticated algorithm to have any hope of scaling. I'll see if I can come up with some specific examples…

@cks can you at least summarize the blog entry as a toot in response to this inquiry? if you don't actually get around to writing said blog entry? I never used a lisp-machine, but i've only ever heard good things about them…

@ricci of course it isn't: I peruse my feed, in my web browser, by paging with the spacebar, as God intended 😜

@ricci oh man, you just accidentally (I assume 😜) brought up one of my pet peeves wrt Mastodon's UI. without getting all the way up on top of the soap-box, it turns out it requires some actually significant extra effort to be able to page through the feed in any manner other than scrolling: I'm not sure whether to blame gargon for that, or just React in general. 😛

@mhoye this probably isn't a helpful addition, but I'm irritated about it, so I'm tooting, regardless 😛They pulled this shit with fucking ·sudo· as well: "drop-in" replacing (🤣 ) with a rust version. The rust version ·completely· ignores /etc/sudoers.d; but if you use `alternatives` to revert to the C version, then of course that functionality is restored. One more serious addition: I'm not at all convinced it ·is· time to "rewrite/rebuild": at least when it comes to linux-specific rust efforts (both kernel and userspace), this currently is starting, from my perspective, to feels a lot more like a fad than a sincere effort based on superior engineering principles (I agree that rust has several compelling features in a systems language, memory-safety chief amongst them; that doesn't imply every system should be rewritten in ti, ASAP)

@futurebird I'm going to pull a guess straight out of thin air, but I think they might be intended for US Imperial Units use: where there's e.g. feet + inches, or pounds + ounces, etc: you can then perform additional arithmetic on the units "independently" when you can extract integer & fraction
