@lauren yes, Harlan was famously… particular. And blunt. The novel was more about the experience of producing the show (whose dynamics Harlan doubtless contributed to) rather than a comment on the result.

@lauren sigh. I recall when it was forbidden (but not always honored) to use your SSN for anything other than Social Security. And then congress decided it was ok to use it for other ID purposes because it made things more convenient for bureaucrats and such. Downhill since. With no regard to the misuses that occurred down the road. The West did not learn enough from the Nazis and later the Stasi and their extensive data collection of their populations.

@futurebird It might be appropriate to distinguish between weird (that is unsettling due to its near but not completely familiar, like the uncanny valley) and alien (that which is completely outside of experience and expectation). Weird would be in places on Earth or Earth-like. I can’t give an example of the truly alien, because it is outside my experience and imagination.

@tomjennings @VE2UWY @mcnado you just reminded me of the episode of House where the patient is so large that he breaks the table of the imager they (try) to put him in. Or maybe it’s a military or cargo imager. Which found no bombs inside.
