Many people know carbs are 4 kCal/g, protein is 4 kCal/g, and fat is 9 kCal/g.Some people know that alcohol is 7 kCal/gHow many people know the energy content of citric acid? Citric acid is right there in the Krebs cycle (ATP cycle) so it must have energy content. It is 2.5 kCal/g. Never listed on nutrition labels.

Many cryptographic protocols are designed around the security model that assumes an attack will be a remote attacker using cryptanalysis to derive one of your keys (among a set of keys). You can understand why this is, these protocols are designed by cryptographers, and the threat they are always thinking about is a cryptographic attack. But the real world threat is device compromise. You are at the very least 1000x more likely to be compromised by having your device hacked and all of its keys and data stolen or otherwise compromised. Therefore, things like the double-ratchet protocol don't really help in the real world. Breaking one conversation key doesn't break the others, but if your device can read all past messages, so can someone that totally compromises your device. The signal double ratchet protocol is fine. It doesn't make things worse. It makes things marginally better. But I want people to understand how thin that margin really is.

The USA is hopeless. There is no good leadership on the horizon. Ethics continue to tumble (Boeing quality is shit and is now murdering whistleblowers; Politicans are for sale, and Israel bought them all). Look to yourselves and your family and friends, including us on nostr. Keep your head down and be self-reliant. And last, do not put hope in politicians or your government. They will always disappoint you.Is there a better country to move to? Not really. Every country is both better and worse. At least you get to pick your poison though.

Ok after this Trump conviction, nobody in the Untied States ever gets to say Russia and/or China are corrupt (compared to the USA) without me laughing in their face. The series of corrupt, immoral, war criminal, and unjust moves made by the US is beyond staggering at this point and people seriously cannot be so dumb as to still believe in American exceptionalism or America as the steward of the principles of the enlightenment. People who still think America is great are delusional, clinging on to familiarity and hope and memories.

Lawyers I trust (who aren't Trump fans) say that he didn't, and that the case was ridiculous on multiple fronts. Lawyers like Glenn Greenwald, Jonathan Turley, Alan Dershowitz (not that I don't think he is an asshole in other regards). Dershowitz said this case will change the justice system forever, that now it will be used as a political tool to bring suits where no crime was committed as a way to punish political dissidents. The weaponization of the legal system is complete.I don't think there is a mechanism to undo this damage other than amending the constitution, which won't happen for many good reasons.

#politics #iran #anti-propagandaIran believes that there is a difference between men and women, just like Western conservatives.Iran believes that there are muslim rape gangs that want to rape women, just like Western conservatives.Iran is conservative, just like Western conservatives.Iran is traditional, just like Western conservatives.Rather than have complete equality and freedom like we do in the West, Iran has chosen a more traditional method to protect their women from getting raped, and that includes wearing a hijab which makes them less "showy" and would-be rapers are then less likely to get horny and then violent. You may disagree with this strategy (I do). But it is a small difference between Iran and the West. It does not make Iran a horrible human rights abuser.Don't fall for the propaganda shared between Western warmongers and modern woke feminists. This talking point has come back up to try to drum up support for attacking Iran. There are thousands of things I could say about the USA that are far worse, and you've been saying them yourself for years so I don't have to bother... I will just assume that the point was made. The statistics show that Iranian women are graduating from universities in far greater numbers than men, especially in STEM fields. They are not oppressing their women.

The USA does gender transition surgeries without letting the parents be involved, and they don't help their natural disaster victims. Should we bomb the USA to smithereens to liberate it's people while killing it's people?

America needs to lower the minimum wage for migrant workers and also streamline visas for them and start issuing huge numbers of these or else the prices of food and housing construction is going to skyrocket.I'm not against the crackdown on illegal immigration. But can't sensibly do one without the other.Of course I have no dog in the race, I'm just calling it like I see it.

I have 12 TB of storage on physical platters still currently plugged in, and about another 34 TB on disks on my bookshelf that I plug in only when I need to access that data (rarely). Can't fit all of that onto an NVMe.

The US government via USAID/Internews put 25 media outlets in New Zealand into a dependent position including Stuff, NZME, Business Desk, Newshub and 1News. New Zealand is the only Five Eyes country that doesn't permit US nuclear ships in its ports.https://x.com/wikileaks/status/1888740117247885509https://stoppress.co.nz/news/groupm-nz-launches-back-to-news-programme-to-support-responsible-journalism/I can attest to the fact that NZ News was captured by interests that lie outside of NZ (probably US) long before 2023 (when USAID allegedly did this). And the last Labour government put incentives in place to keep them captured.

Nostr could do some of the things Alex says Bluesky does better:1) We can create a new kind that replaces kind 1 which has spans (or facets) indicating bold, or url, or anything else. I wanted to do it that way since years ago when we had the '[0]' replacements (I thought it should just be a span in a tag with no placeholder in the content)2) If we think a chain of events is needed to prove that none of your events were censored (so we can properly claim censorship resistance), we could add another kind where authors publish their chain of events as a list of IDs. If it needs some kind of mergeability to fix race conditions, I've talked about how to do that with a last-write-wins (LWW) conflict free replicated data type (CRDT) in https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips/pull/1630.

The author of this image values alone time. I value social time. Because I'm almost always alone. It is hard to increase your "social" as an introverted single adult. But this isn't obvious because childhood and school throws so much social at you that you learn to take it for granted.

This is a chart of latencies I created quite a long time ago, based on the best estimates I could find.https://mikedilger.com/latency.htmlNotice how slow the Internet is. Bandwidth has increased massively over the years, but latency hasn't because the distances haven't changed (except starlink is closer to earth) and the speed of light hasn't changed.Notice rotational disks are also pretty slow, 10x faster than the Internet though.Even SSDs and memory are slow compared to computations. You might be tempted to compute something once and save it to a variable, when in fact it might actually be better to just recompute it over and over in different places in your code. Compilers might improve this for you, or they might not. What always seems suprising to me is that gigabit ethernet is 1000x faster to respond than your local physical disk! Writing to a server on your network is way faster than writing to a spinning magnetic platter in your local computer. When writing rust, perfectionists worry about copying and memory allocation. These are the last things to worry about. I think they are useful to worry about, but you need to put it into perspective.Compare their latency of memory allocation to that of contacting a DVM to sign your event for you. That latter having about 4 network round trips (DNS, SSL establishment, AUTH, and the request itself) takes something like 500,000 times longer. To get a better feel for that difference, if it takes 1 second to do a memory allocation, it takes on the order of 5 days to do a DVM request.
