@simon Yes, it’s hard for humans, too. Even when I’m writing about strictly technical topic where truth should be objective and easy to verify, there is still a huge amount of judgement. Sometimes I have to generalize to introduce a new topic, or give just part of the explanation that’s appropriate for a certain audience because the full truth would only cause confusion. An expert reading the thing written for a novice might object it’s inaccurate. So many judgement calls

@simon at one job (as a technical writer) I had to write a “truthiness standard” because I opened documentation authoring up to the whole company and quickly learned my internalized judgement calls about determining the accuracy of technical sources were in no way intuitive to most people. And again, this is technical information where (theoretically) it is possible to verify objective facts. If we get into more fuzzy areas where humans don’t agree? So much harder.

@rinidisc @Rasp nah, the father just rolls the dice for the most probable gamete. :) The mother then picks out a gender she thinks will go nicely with it and dresses up the baby according to her culture’s traditions. ~pauses~This toot started as a joke and then I realized a lot of cultures keep kids’ gender relatively ambiguous until puberty when you’d do a coming of age ceremony and choose your final gender. So that really happens.

@simon that looks wonderful and also reminds me a lot of vaso de frutas, except instead of serving in a plastic cup you got your spicy fruits in an awesome pineapple.

I need to add a blog roll to my blog, I think. Part of the whole vibe of returning to self managing web presence, both to show what/who my thoughts are in conversation with and as a resource for myself. Anyone have a nice format they’ve seen lately? I’m using #11ty to generate a static site, so I have a lot of flexibility. I’m looking for aesthetic/design suggestions. I can sort out the code. #eleventy #IndieWeb #blogging

@simon @slott56 @doug this is an argument I’ve been trying to make for using them as a productivity tool for technical writers, but instead people want chatbots that surface the synthetic text directly to end users without a human in the loop. I’m all please let’s not hand chainsaws to readers to make custom furniture. Let’s use chainsaws to make furniture faster so we can offer more kinds. (This anology has become strained. As a specific example, by custom furniture I mean code samples with annotations. By more kinds I mean code samples in more languages. )

Happy New Year! May the lemon pig bring you luck in the coming year (even if the lemon pig looks more like a fat mouse)#LemonPig

While the #LemonPig is probably a recently made up tradition, lucky pigs assiciated with the New Year might be a bit older, though my go-to reference for all things lucky is a little vague on the topichttps://www.luckymojo.com/luckypig.html

Even if you’re not into that kind of thing normally, I would strongly recommend a visit to Lucky Mojo if you’re ever in the neighborhood. It’s just to the west of Santa Rosa, in the small town of Forestville. In additon to all the good luck charms in the shop and the amazing collection of Americana, the outside of the shop has an impressive model train railway (or it did last time I was there). You’ll probably want to buy a memento even if you don’t believe in any of *that stuff* because it’s just so charming.

@simon have you ever been to Lucky Mojo Curio Co in Forestville? I made a lemon pig because you posted about it and thought about your love of niche museums and it occurrd to me you’d really enjoy Lucky Mojo. If you go, try to see if car yronwode is around and is willing to give you a tour of her bakelite collection. She would appreciate your energy.

@simon there was definitely a model railway there when I went in 2015. I imagine it’s still there. They seem to just accumulate more cool weird stuff all the time.

Fedifriends, help me find fun sightseeing and touristy things in San Francisco that are wheelchair accessible. More context: My in-laws are visiting from the UK next week and one of them uses a mobility scooter or wheelchair (can also get around short distances on crutches). We will not have access to a car, so we have to get around by public transit, cabs, etc. They enjoy people watching, gardens, birds, hanging out in cafes, and talking to the locals. So far I was thinking they might like JFK Promenade and the surrounding museums, the Botanical Garden, and taking a boat tour of the bay. On a meta level, I don’t quite know how to research this so I’d appreciate meta tips as well. (Boosts for reach most welcome)#sfba #SanFrancisco #accessibility #wheelchair #WheelchairAccessible

I would like to follow more people who shitpost about critical theory and continental philosophy generally. I need more jokes and sly allusions to Foucault, Lacan, Derrida, Butler, etc. But not just those. I know it’s niche, but it’s a big fediverse. Please help me find them/you!#CriticalTheory #poststructuralism #bigOtter

@futurebird that’s amazing. I had no idea they lived that long. My favorite ant fact is one I discovered personally by looking at ants when I was out hiking the first time I took magic mushrooms (about 20 years ago). I saw a large colony of ants on a dry hillside in Angel Island, CA. I started paying more attention to them then I usually did. And I noticed that there were ants of different sizes all working together. I had previously somehow assumed that if ants are a different size they must be a different species. I realized they must vary in size. I also realized the whole hillside was just one group of ants working together! Then I started to wonder, could it be that the colony spanned the entire island? I don’t know the answer the last one. But simply pausing to observe closely with a fresh attitude taught me something new, which I confirmed for mysef on later visits.

Why does soup taste better on the second day, when you reheat it? Tomato soup is most famous for this effect, but I had lentil soup for lunch and it was way better than it was at dinner.

@futurebird ooh, I hadn’t thought about light fermentation as one of the possibilities—it would go a long way to explaining why tomato soup is particularly good since it has acidity and dairy, basically ready to start a fermentation.
