@futurebird It makes sense that g should be linear, with g(x)=mx+b. The quadratic coefficient of 4 in f(g(x)) would necessitate m=±2. Let's look at m=2 first; then f(g(x))=f(2x+b)=4x²+(4b-4)x+(b²-2b), which would make 4b-4=-8 which is b=-1, and then b²-2b is 3 like it should be. So g(x)=2x-1 works. But for purposes of completeness, we could also look at m=-2. Then f(g(x))=f(-2x+b)=4x²+(-4b+4)x+(b²-2b), so -4b+4=-8 gives b=3, and b²-2b=3 in this case too. So g(x)=-2x+3 also works.

@futurebird Apropos of fractions, there's a brilliant scene in the Isao Takahata film _Omohide Poro Poro_ in which a young girl expresses frustration at the notion that dividing by 1/4 is a different notion than dividing by 4, and her sister comprehensively fails to illuminate matters. There's a translation script for the whole film at http://www.nausicaa.net/miyazaki/opp/script_opp_en.txt , and the fraction bit has a footnote where the translator consulted with a mathematician to explain what's going on.

@ajsadauskas @benni @futurebird I'm actually a member (#661d) of the DSA! No, the other one. Actually, both of them. They (the Dozenalists, not the Democratic Socialists) are a pretty quiet group. Their newsletter publishes kind of sporadically, and they're goofy, but they have fun with it.Several years ago they had a convention in Cincinnati. I live in Louisville, and I know I had something else going on that day (I forget what), and didn't go. I still kind of wish I could have.

@futurebird Alas, "everyone is bisexual" is premised on the notion that NPC characteristics are consistent between playthroughs, and one notable way that's not true is that Leah's ex Kel is the same gender as the PC.In a co-op game with PCs of different genders, though, all the young folk are bisexual (now I wonder if Kel can get two different genders in Leah's cutscene in multiplayer). The only one I'm sure is bi is Alex, who natters about pretty girls even if the PC is his boyfriend.

@futurebird Some of it, particularly for people in their 20s, is the difficulty of transitioning into the "real world". Like, school and college essentially force you into social interaction with a peer group. After you're out of those systems, there's no social mechanism that _makes_ you meet people, and having to spend energy to seek out spaces and activities with peers makes it all harder and less likely to happen.
