@mike A wonderful three part saga. The scene setting and exposition; the disaster and the end of hopes and dreams; and the redemption and new hope. Bravo!

@kev I have far, far fewer devices:* Work Laptop* Work Phone* Raspberry Pi* Pi Zero* NUC like PC (bought since lockdown - long story)* And then the server-side stuff I run in the cloudThe biggest reason they may proliferate is that my work devices get locked down to the point where I can't use them for technological purposes: the NUC is because Cisco Web Security means my web traffic doesn't have my home as its src_ip.

Day 04 of #100DaysToOffload. I'm trying not to be discouraging, but some realism is needed.https://write.as/dvavasour/on-estimating-how-long-something-will-take

@mike I was introduced to emacs in the late 1980s. Until then I'd only used line editors, so there was no competition. And it stuck: the best text editor is the one you know best, so for me any post-install script has "yum install -y emacs" straight after "yum update"

@mike Does anyone else have a hierarchical approach to tabs?- Ones that are actually open in the browser- Ones that have been stashed to OneTab- Ones that are in the "June2020" bookmarks folder- Ones that make it to the bookmark bar- Ones that make it to the bookmark manager (for me Google bookmarks)

@ndegruchy ... and the progress tracking WebEx where someone reads each line and you have to give an update. For extra points, a junior updating the spreadsheet and the project manager dictating the updates, repeatedly saying "can you scroll right/left".Because there's no budget to pay for a Jira.

@Gina I see lots of resumes that list skills in almost everything, maybe we should let the garbage trucks collide?

@Gina Recruiters play keyword bingo. GOOD recruiters want to know about the position being filled, and review resumes against this understanding. Their fee is 3 months or 6 months salary.CHEAP recruiters play keyword bingo, and get a small fee for little effort.THE WORST recruiters look for direct recruitment adverts and try to get in the middle. When a recruiter asks for your resume, ask them to describe the position.

@kev This year the blackbirds have been going for it round me. Mrs V tells me that it's all territorial, and the tuneful song is actually a turf war. If only humanity could establish the balance of power so delightfully.

@Gina It's different in nature to 2008 - that was a financial shock, this is mainly a demand side shock. The travel and hospitality sector is at a complete standstill and will restart slowly.Perhaps 10 years of change has happened in a few months?

@mike My older son is working at home, and some of the time my wife is too. At times we trip over each other, but an early bonus was having workplace banter with my son!

@kev About 25 years ago I travelled to London to hear Stallman speak. He was a bit of an objectionable t**t then, and most people's innate t**tery amplifies over time. However, he's an important figure in the history of computing, and the FSF has done much more good than harm. But today's introspective bickering over nuance is reminiscent of the British left in the 1980s.

Bad UI design part 94VPN client opens and shows a button that says "Connect". Then it decides to auto-connect and changes the button in the same location to "Disconnect".

@Mer__edith I remember going on a course with <big data software vendor>. Instructor checked there were no data scientists in the room before branding what the product does as "Machine Learning". Hefty correlation is impressive itself, no need to call it ML.
