@masterblaster @inverness01 @JM 2003 was the last straw for me. When I saw every news station and paper start to root for the US to lose the Iraq war, gleefully touting a daily death count to declare preemptive failure. It became clear to me that they hate us more than they ever loved peace.

@stephanieanne @watch4thedrop It's a never ending game of status signalling one-upsmanship. It's the same as the rule about not ending sentences with a preposition: an arbitrary rule devised by the stylish elite to elevate themselves above the "ignorant" masses. Status seekers will always look for something trendy to scold others about.

@JM @MMA you may be right about what works better, but I've seen how true vintage colors are often much brighter than what we think they should be, based on our experience with antiques, which have so often gotten darker with dirt over the years. Thus a perception that muted colors are vintage. My 2¢

@REX underestimates the lingering power of the media over culture, which informs the masses what is cool and popular and establishes norms for how people signal "I belong!" to the tribe. Most people will believe whatever they have to in order to stay at the cool kids table. The media is the only fraud necessary to turn an election.

@redwhitebluedude @TearGasBreakfast My red state Republican parents retired to the blue state coast, and over the last ten years I've watched them turn into pretty hard core Democrats. They still oppose leftism but somehow think mainstream Democrats are not leftists. It's horrifying.

@rarity @timr @REX Logic is the wrong tool to apply in predicting Democrats' response to bad news. Think in terms of Identity, not rational self interest. Their ego prevents recognition of mistakes and instead sees Republican criticism as an unfair attack by a heartless enemy. It is why the media always focuses on the Republican response rather than the Democrat flub. It is tribal, not logical, or even malicious. It is simply how their lizard brains work.

@REX This embarrassment in Afghanistan does seem to have the effect of undermining the esteem Americans have for the military, which was the most highly respected remaining institution, perhaps punishing then for strongly supporting Trump and making a sharp decrease in funding more politically acceptable. A massive humiliation is a great way to justify shrinking away from the world stage, which is exactly what Obama wants for America.

@darulharb My system involves smart plugs, the smartphone app, and webhooks sent to a device automation app. No Google or Apple devices. Thought about getting a Raspberry Pi to run as a local server, but haven't done that project yet.

@darulharb The open freezer door issue was a real one I tried to insure against. Kids failing to ensure a solid seal on a door that wanted to pop open, leading to spoiled meat and a basement floor covered in bloody water. Bought a sensor for my dumb freezer, but it turned out to be Bluetooth instead of wifi, which really didn't fit my grand plans. Happy for Amazon's generous return policy.
