You know how there are awards for exceptional or outstanding contributions to a science? Well there should be one of those for steady solid contributions.

The other day, I read this opinion piece basically asking why Brits hate taxes so much when other Europeans (namely Scandinavians) happily pay even higher taxes, and I’m thinking, but you didn’t mention that they also have higher wages! Britains got one of the lowest wages across Europe.

@johnelalamo 😝 but you can’t ask people to pay more taxes that cut into their wages when their salaries are in effective decline given everything is getting more and more expensive, without dealing with the cost of living crisis and improving quality of life. Britain has one of the worst quality of life.

We watched Terminator Genesis (Genysis???) last night and while a lot of things didn’t make sense, I did enjoy watching Emilia Clarke as Sarah Connor. Perfect casting there. Her interactions with Pops the aging Arnie T800 was sweet and fun to watch as well. The happily ever after ending with Kyle Reece felt a bit like some shipper fan fic, but it’s kind of a nice change from the doom and gloom of the previous instalments of the franchise. At least the kids enjoyed it so I’m good with that!

@alxsim @eseb @officialSMBE @ASNAmNat @sse_evolution @SystBiol @BritishEcolSoc Is it just the financial management (like taking payment etc) you're looking for? If it doesn't involve actual server hosting or technical side (we don't have that capacity at the moment), then I can ask relevant members of the PalAss Council.

Delivered last lecture for my 1st year module. They’ve got a practical assessment next week and I’m done with them. I’ve got a couple of weeks more with my 2nd year module. Next year I’m going to shift that module schedule forwards a bit more so that all lectures and especially the guest lectures come earlier in the semester…

@futurebird I think a temperate bog is a wetland, which I don't think is usually forested, while a temperate rainforest is a forest with various definitions but usually one that has high levels of rainfall. I think Britain's natural forests are temperate rainforests.

So-called species that end up nested within another species are at best a subspecies and more likely a population of that higher-order taxon. Eg the Iriomote cat which molecular phylogenetics revealed sat within leopard cats.

@Gurre The case with the Iriomote cat is that it’s considered critically endangered as a subspecies so I don’t necessarily think species status is what distinguishes functional or practical entity. We just can’t call them species within our current working framework.

@mike @Gurre Surely none of them would support breaking another species into a paraphyletic taxon? We’d have to erect species for each subspecies and population?

"Schools should be teaching useful skills like taxes and financial management"This implies that education education is esoteric and useless, but seeing how most people lack understanding of our own biology and human rights, yet have strong opinions on them, it is crucial to reinforce education on science and humanities subjects even more.#education #school #science #transrightsarehumanrights #trans

Western societies have been increasingly focusing on the return on investment of education. This is reflected in the constant posing of questions like "Is a university degree worth it?" or "Are some subjects more useful than others?". Also comments like "Schools are teaching useless things and should be teaching things like how to file taxes". This is capitalist thinking and distorts the fundamental principles of education. Education empowers people and uplifts societies wholesale.#education
