@sir At least to some degree (I think) this is explained here https://www.raptitude.com/2010/07/your-lifestyle-has-already-been-designed/

@retroedgetech Never tried it, but it was mentioned sometimes by K.Mandla https://kmandla.wordpress.com/as a distro fit for old low-spec machines.

@retroedgetech Most of what I learned about window managers I learned from this forum thread https://crunchbang.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=18273Was really fun to follow. Each day a new one.

@kadin @ozoned @retroedgetech One big plus of older Thinkpads and also older Latitudes that I did not see mentioned so far is their great haptics. Both lines had very nice built in keyboards in the past (Dell up to the Latitude 6440 and Lenovo until X220). You won't get those on a modern laptop. And as business notebooks they were built to be serviced and repaired by IT people, so they usually have great repairablity.

@retroedgetech Go for it. I have two 32 bit laptops that I regularly use, because I like their haptics and overall design.Sure, you have to stay away from bloaty Electron apps, which also means you can't install Signal Desktop, but apart from that, they are still enjoyable to use.My preferred distros for these kinds of laptops: Bunsenlabs and Bodhi, or if possible (WiFi will probably not work unless the card is changed) Trisquel.

@retroedgetech Cool. Never heard of that and I have some ThinkPads around that might benefit from that.

@kzimmermann Openshot is nice and simple. When the task is even simpler: cutting and/or concatenating, converting between different format etc., I usually use ffmpeg.

Watching a documentary from 1978, that tries to explain the many balances that make the biosphere on earth possible and keep our planet habitable. Of course the danger of human made climate change is already mentioned:https://www.zdf.de/dokumentation/dokumentation-sonstige/querschnitt-die-balance-der-biosphaere-100.htmlThe presenter is Hoimar v. Ditfurt a science journalist that manages to present a "holistic" perspective, without ever resorting to pseudoscience or anthropocentrism (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoimar_von_Ditfurth)I miss people like that on current media.

Simulating the runaway effects that happen with ice ages on the one hand and greenhouse effects on the other.

Simulating the greenhouse effect by setting up two tubes and filling one of them slowly with CO2, while heating both from above.Candles in the tube on the right will indicate how high the CO2 has filled up the tube.

He closes the first of the two documentaries with foreshadowing the topic of the next, the danger to the climate balance, and with a remark that it looks like no one is going to act against it.

@atyh Compared to other terminal activities, email seems to be somewhat neglected in current documentation. Last time I wanted to configure alpine to use it with my University email (when I still had one), I had to rely on an article from 2000 that is still online more out of luck than by intention.

@Coyote If you don't need performance, you could go for a Thinkpad X61. That's the oldest X-Series with 64 bit CPU, so OS support in the future is not in question. OpenBSD and Linux run great on that. The keyboard is slightly better (in my opinion) than the one of the X220 and it is a little smaller. The performance is a lot less than on the X220, but so is usually the price (in Germany usually 30-50€ for X61 and 150-200€ for X200, given both are in best condition).(Writing this on one.)

@chillanarchist01 @atyh While I don't know about "correct" software, there is a ton of browsers for gemini links, please have a look:https://gemini.circumlunar.space/software/I happen to use Lagrange at the moment, but the others will also work. Bombadillo will give you access to a lot more than just gemini. Gemini is much less demanding in software than http(s).

@atyh " When the Linux Outlaws were still on the air, and Crunchbang was still around."Those were both good. At least #! has a good continuation in Bunsenlabs.
