@metalune ah, I meant a break as in some time not worrying about privacy. It sounded like you got a lot of really rewarding connection from your elementary school friend, that’s awesome! Social connection is one of our needs, and unfortunately in this world we have to give up privacy to get that sometimes. Its not all or nothing. we can work hard for privacy and then still use non privacy respecting services sometimes because they give us access to something important.

@cosullivan my lamy safari has served me well for years. I’d also consider tossing in a request for a refillable cartridge and inkwell. Barring needing to replace a nib you won’t have to spend money on writing instruments for several years.

@JordiGH @davidrevoy at this point I don’t think that the FSF will be a long standing institution. These decisions demonstrate a greater interest in the personality cult of RMS than in actually fostering/mentoring new leadership talent to ensure the future of the foundation.

@metalune let us know how the experience goes. I’ve been tempted to try the same thing, but I found Twitter RSS feeds to be a really poor experience, largely because dialogue on that site assumes embedded retweets to follow the conversation.

Does anyone know of good FOSS dictation software? In my brief search on the web most of the options out there are built for research and/or geared towards using speech recognition for executing commands.I just want to feed it a file and get a transcription output. Must be on device, I don't want to use a cloud service for this, cli is preferred.

I had a late night epiphany last night lying in bed.Because of the origins of the "Free Software" movement with ivory tower academics, many of it's issues are the same ones that we routinely deal with when it comes to things produced in the ivory tower.Completely out of touch with the real world, chock full of all the standard barriers and assumptions endemic to the classist nature of the tower, and constructed in such a nature that it's nearly impossible to practically use for anyone outside of the tower or closely adjacent.This is why critical theory is of utmost importance.

FOSS folks tend to view empowerment as a question of whether or not I can access that code/server and modify how it functions. That is empowerment/freedom.But for non technical folk, if such things are required, they then become a BARRIER to empowerment and freedom.When it comes to software, I am far more concerned with empowering people to make meaningful change in their communities than I am with providing them with FOSS software.
