@karmanyaahm @punkpaleo If the cop inquired what you were up to with that in the back seat, I guess you could accurately claim "skullduggery"... 🤣

@john Just wait until one of 'em forgets that the verb "oust" is at the root of "ouster" and tries to coin a new, stupid word such as "oustering" or "ousterizing." 🙄

@john @AmyIsCoolz @alcootatooter @gay_ornithischians @llewelly I think biologists need a "fundamental unit" of biology because they need a point at which to say "evolution happens here." Individuals do not evolve. _Populations_ evolve, but then it's a question of "populations of a _what_?" I'm not saying that breeding makes for the best definition of "species," & of course there's a reason why ~150 definitions of "species" are argued! (Not claiming I have a solution here!)

@LexiGirl @freemo @georgetakei I'm sure it's about control: they want their beliefs enforced at all costs, and they do it under the guise of "saving" people. It may not even be conscious for many of them--they don't see "saving" as power & control; they just crave the fulfillment of "saving" people, which equals exerting power. Their self-worth is tied wholly to the ability to control others. But they'll never understand that about themselves--they're incapable of that degree of self-awareness.

@grammargirl I've been backing things up in multiple places religiously for at least a couple of decades, ever since one of my fellow grad students had his laptop stolen and he lost 6 months of work on his dissertation! I have so much stuff, though, that free cloud service account limits are too small for my stuff, so I predominantly use hard drives.

@futurebird The one that are soooo close to being mammaliaforms (but rather far from being mammals), such as _Kayentatherium_ (restoration here by H. Kyoht Luterman) are wonderfully weird and interesting...

@futurebird I have a similar exercise that uses a 100 ft. cloth tape measure to represent 4.6 billion years of Earth history. I have a spreadsheet of events, when they occurred, and the conversion of where each of those events lands on the tape measure, and I have laminated signs taped to lawn staples for each event. The students gather the signs, consult the chart, then place them at their distances. It's not 13.7 billion years, but if you want the files, I think I have them somewhere.

@markwitton Echoing others: I receive no spam at all on my Mastodon account. I am not sure I know what spam on Mastodon even looks like...? I hope this is maybe just a settings tweak to fix for you! Hate to see you go!

@markwitton I've also heard about the QR code scams, but haven't seen one yet. I don't know if they're actually produced by humans or by bots; if the latter, blocking them shouldn't be a big deal...?

@futurebird Considering atmospheric oxygen levels were far lower than today in the Cryogenian, Ediacaran, and Cambrian, I wouldn't go to those times without an infinitely renewing oxygen source! 😵 And the Carboniferous just seems too darned humid...

@futurebird Kinda reminds me of the description of the bunjee, an elephant-ish prehistoric creature from an old kid's book I remember reading a zillion years ago called "The Bunjee Venture"!

@futurebird I use the term to mean "branched off the cladogram father 'down,'" essentially meaning "fewer steps (nodes) between it and the common ancestor than things farther 'up' the cladogram." This would translate to "having fewer of the apomorphies seen in taxa farther 'up' the cladogram," which I guess could be read as "more anatomically (and, presumably, genetically) similar to the common ancestor than are taxa farther 'up' the cladogram." It's certainly a loosey-goosey definition & usage!
