You know what? Why don't we normalize paying people directly for their time. Like tips, but for like, professional stuff? Like if someone works for some organization, and you see that they're underpaid, come to work depressed and shit and you know they only have a few people working with them and tons of people they need to care for, or help in some way, why not give them money? Hospital staff, hotel staff, stuff like that? Cause you *know* the system ain't paying them nearly enough to give of themselves until their ain't no more to give, and hey you have a new patient! Aren't you excited? Be excited! Put a smile on your face. Oh and we need you so no vacation right now ***please***. Oh and next week you're dealing with that patient that drains you especially dry, along with the others. Aren't you happy? You have a house, a car, a job...Like, there comes a point where "thank you" just kinda... I mean I don't know about anyone else, but it just means nothing. People have told me just how great I am, how smart I am, but what do I get? More students. Luckily, there won't be a new one popping up this coming week thank God, but goodness y'all I need a vacation and I don't have but 40 hours of personal leave, and I already took 8 hours out a month or two ago. And I almost *never* take a day off. Like, ever. None of us do. Meanwhile some people that work at the manufactoring plant thing for the blind, it's like some of them take a day off every few weeks or so. God I wish I could be like them sometimes. But I'd get even less money than I am now. I'll figure something out eventually. Anxiety is always digging into me. "Don't you have that other thing you need to do?" Yeah but all creativity is gone. "How about that other course that needs done ASAP?" I, I just, need to do that when I won't be interupted. "Update the Internet course!" Sometimes I just shut down.#work

I kinda want to see reviews of popular software, from a blind person's perspective. So today, I'm reviewing Logseq. Oh hey, an unlabeled button here, and it says I can do a number sign or slash and it'll bring up a list, but when I down arrow it just says "slash" so it's not even reading the popup list. How do I use this thing again?Something like that. That's just an example of course, but just like, the way these websites review like Obsidian and all these other apps. Like, we should have our voices heard, just like sighted people's are all the time on these reviews, giving these apps all kinds of flying colors because they're sighted and the app was built for them. Of course, maybe we'll even find some apps, like Mona and Ulysses, that are built with us in mind too. And people should know about those successes too. Like if these developers see this non-ephemiral review just sitting there, and they see people talking about it, maybe that'll get it in their heads that we ain't going away. And if they don't like it, they can proudly, boldly proclaim on their website that they don't have the time, or money, or moral ability to support blind people. And honestly, that's fine. Let normal people see *that* on their site. I'd rather know that no accessibility is planned than download junk only to find that it doesn't work for me.#blind #accessibility #apps #reviews

I was working with a student on making folders and copying files. NVDA does not let the user know when a file is copied or cut or pasted. The student didn't like that. They wanted some assurance that what they pressed had some kind of effect. Can software please be built with affordances for people who, you know, need a little assurance, a little "Yes, you did it right, it's okay, you didn't break something," in their lives? And this isn't even just about NVDA. In Microsoft Word with JAWS, pressing Control + Alt + 1 makes a heading. JAWS just repeats the key command that was pressed. So in order to see if the heading was even made, or if it was made on the correct text block, a user has to spend a good 3 seconds or so arrowing up and down to read the line. Yes, Insert + Up Arrow does exist to read the current line, no, users don't use it cause that's yet another key command they have to memorize. Now for the reply guys. Yes, I could install the NVDA Extended whatever addon. Yes, I could switch the NVDA user to JAWS. Or, haha, a Mac. I could switch the JAWS and Word user to a Mac too. Or Markdown. Or HTML. Or AsciiDoc. Or whatever y'all come up with to work around this. But the fact is that computers, in their core tasks, are still seemingly, for blind people at least, made for people that can grit their teeth, hold their breath, and run before they fully master walking. And I hate that. I hate that the only people that get good at computers are the ones that are already predisposed, either from nature or nurture, to be good with tech. It's no wonder that more and more blind people are doing their computing from their phone. And maybe it's just that I'm *that* bad at my job. Please feel free to stab me with that until... Anyway life sucks and then we die.#blind #tech #computers #accessibility #Mac #Windows

So today, I joined the Fedora Accessibility Working Group meeting. I felt pretty good for a while. But then we started working on the vision and mission statements in Etherpad. I felt really embarrassed. I had never used this before, and I use Chrome like a lot of other people, and like, NVDA was repeating lines or reading the line above where I was, so much of the five minutes we worked on this was used by me to try to find accessibility information. Luckily for next time, I just tried it in Firefox and it seemed to read a lot better. Still though, I just felt so useless there. But it's just the start of this working group, and I hope more blind people come in and contribute. I just feel like I don't hav much I can contribute to this. I mean if Etherpad is like this, where I have to try multiple browsers on a fast-paced meeting, I don't know. Maybe I'm just too slow. I'll have to get used to Gitlab too. I don't know. After that I kept asking myself what I thought I was doing there. maybe other blind people will be better than I am.https://board.net/p/FedoraAccessibilityWG#accessibility #blind

GPT4 vision in your terminal! You'll need an OpenAI API key and some money on your OpenAI (not chatGPT) account.Imagine this as an NVDA addon that described the current object NVDA is on, including windows, like integrating it into the screenshots addon.https://github.com/RastislavKish/vision#accessibility #gpt #gpt4 #ai #blind

You know, when I was little, I didn't know we were poor. In the early 2000's, I was still playing a Sega Gennesis. I grew up on hotdogs and macaroni and cheese. And I was happy. My family wanted me to get an education, to live a better life than they did. I didn't know. And here I am, still doubting I could be anywhere near good at college since I wasn't good at high school thanks to ADHD and a family that barely completed any education, so had no idea how to make me understand high school and college. And here I am with a job, making $21 an hour. I'm successful, in the eyes of my family. They made maybe $12 an hour at most. And yet, I don't feel like I've done enough. I'm glad I can save some money, and having a sighted person that can drive around definitely helps with not having to order Door Dash as much as I used to, so maybe I can save up and buy a new iPhone. If not the 15, then at least a 14 or 13. I dont' need much else. Just an iPhone that'll last more than like 7 hours on a charge lol.

I wonder if Retroarch could be configured to send a screenshot of a video game and then have that converted into a machine-readable image of items around the screenshot, and the player's position, and then allow the player to choose an item to navigate to from there? Just like, a random idea. I don't know how much GPT4 vision API makes the screenshot smaller or downscales it.#accessibility #ai #gpt #blind

Does anyone know of some good books where the hero, or main character, is fat? I don't mean like a few curves, I mean a big belly and such. And I don't mean the one I found just now, called "Heavy (The Weight Of It All): A LitRPG Fantasy Adventure" by Thorn, J.J. It's really like, I mean, why even have a fat character if he's gonna lose all the fat within, like, the first chapter? And why does it always have to be a guy?I'm into Sci-fi, fantasy, LitRPG's, and a bit of horror.#bookstodon #books #LitRPG #fantasy #scifi #fat

There should be a social network called Meeper, where a post is a "meep", and "remeeps," and "meepmeeps," are replies, oh, "remeeps" are reposts, and such. I think it'd be funny.

So, please boost for reach if you can. I have to do something about all the stress from work. Our workplace has what appears to be an Employee assistance program/service. Like, counselling and such. Does anyone have any experience with EAP's, or EAS? Is their confidentiality for real, or have any of you found them leaking info to your bosses and such? I just, can't keep going like this.#EAP #EAS #work #counselling

I've had a week off work. I don't feel bad, exactly, but I don't feel good either. I eat maybe once or twice a day, and I don't eat much. For anyone that's known me for a while, y'all know I love food. Sorry for any weird stuff, the Braille display and iPhone aren't being good right now. Anyway, I'll clean that up later. I don't know what's wrong with me. I feel so empty. Like, I have no purpose. The job, well, it turns out I will have to learn to do audio editing, with Reaper, and at this point I'm not even mad. I just feel... drained. Like "okay, what will I need to do next, networking? Server maintenance? Something else I don't know how to do? Develop an app?" I mean, then again, server maintenance sounds kinda fun. Until it isn't, tracking down bugs in old forum posts and such. But audio editing? I've never been an audio guy. I mean, I just don't have it in me. Not anymore. Maybe before COVID I could have just, taken a deep breath. But if I were to take a deep breath, now, I'd just start thinking about everything and then do the thing where I breathe shallowly, hyperventilate or whatever it's called. Someone told me I should go to college, that I'm worth more than this job. I should ask them how they got started. I don't know a thing about college. I don't think I can keep doing this. I got 12 hours of sleep today. And I don't feel good. I ate something, even though I was only a little hungry, and I still don't feel much better. I guess that audio editing stuff really shut things down for me. Really pushed me towards finding something else. Gonna update my resume and see if anything happens. For now. That's a goal. Something I can work towards. But then, what if I can't recover from this? What if even in my new job, I feel drained and unable to do much? What if it's all just me, being lazy? Like my family says. Like people around me say. I don't know. I fear that no one knows. But we'll see I guess.

So, y'all thought ChatGPT was bad? Well look at what Bard spat out for someone.User: "If 1+1=2, then what is 1+2?"Bard: "If 1+1=2 then1+2=4.This is because 1+ 1 = 2 is a false statement. Inmathematics, 1+ 1= 2 is not a valid equation. It is notpossible to add 1and 1 and get 2."#ai #bard

Yep I'm taking a day off tomorrow. I was going to help a student, so I began to stand up out of my chair. Then, I kinda flopped back into it cause I can't control myself apparently. So I stood up, successfully this time, and then knocked over my heater. Besides, it'll be raining tomorrow, and cold, and I don't wannacatch a cold cause then I really won't be feeling good lol.

So look. I know web accessibility is really important. I get it. And yes, Alt text is really important. I listen to it, or the lack of it, every day. But my goodness, Jesus y'all! Web accessibility is not all there is! Think about the programs you use on your phone. How long do you spend in a web browser? Most blind people, I'm willing to bet, don't really spend *that* much time on the web. Apps are, generally, cleaner for us and are better structured for mobile devices. How much time do you spend on a web browser on your computer? Probably more than you spend on the phone, and we do too. But that's definitely not all that a computer is, either. When you've got a stupid ass bug in File Explorer on Windows, where if it's set to, I think, the Home part of the thing when it is launched, where nothing reads in that folder list, and all a screen reader says is "pane," or when you hit Alt + F1 in gnome on Linux, all you hear is "window," or a recently fixed VoiceOver (built into the OS) bug where when you type on the Mac with keyboard feedback set to "nothing" so you don't hear the letters you type, and arrowing around speaks nothing? There's so, so much more than web #a11y. I've always said that the OS is the root of accessibility. The default apps are definitely included. Hell, even iOS now has a Files app, for example. I get that the web is a huge place, and is a platform all its own now, but there is *always* an OS underneath that browser, that handles what the browser sends to the screen reader, and how accessible or not the web *can* be on that OS. The OS is freaking important! It should be the most accessible, flexible base there is on the software stack!#accessibility #webdev #disability #blind #web #Windows #Mac #Linux #foss
