Jfc i feel old but just realized: if you’re younger than like 35-40 you basically have zero memory of life without the worldwide web (or what some people call “the internet”) because in 93/94 you were only 5-10 years old. Even scarier, if you’re younger than 25-30 you don’t remember a Googleless world. And holy shit: an ad-free web. It was about 98 when the first ads started appearing, IIRC. STUFF is REALLY NEW, people. And it can CHANGE. IT DOESNT HAVE TO BE THE WAY it is now.

@clive how does it compare to other computing uses? Why focus on AI. I would think any compute-heavy activity at scale would have similar resource consumption. Not that I’m defending AI, I think it’s tremendously harmful, for many other reasons.

Yesterday my wife was on the way to taking our daughter to school via our electric cargo bike, as usual, and a classmate's father taking the classmate to school in a car pulled up beside them and offered to take our kid the rest of the way. As if the only reason we'd be biking is because of economic necessity. My wife replied "No thanks, we LIKE biking"... Now I'm wondering if maybe I should make a flag or sign for the bike that says "we're not poor, we just like bikes"... or "we just hate cars"? @aral unfortunately israel has already all the weapons and ammo they need to finish the genocide they’re doing, so just stopping the arms shipments wouldn’t be enough. The only thing that will stop the genocide at this point is if the US basically lands marines in gaza and forces the IDF to stop the killing. And that is even less likely.

@futurebird like with a lot of schooling, it’s mostly just to normalize and indoctrinate. Teaching how conditions the kids to believe they have to. Sadly there’s usually no similar education on what it means to be part of a society contributing to a common good.

@futurebird i hesitate to attend not out of fear but just frustration. I think the time for parades and sign waving is over, unless accompanied by truly disruptive action. For example when a No Kings (or other) protest happens during morning rush hour on a weekday and people block the streets and highways i will be there with bells on.

Imagine if your language had a word that meant both "food" and "junk food", or at least that's how it was used in common parlance. Then people started pushing back against critiques of (junk) food, saying, "well we've always had food." This is exactly like the people (and i've seen this a lot lately) online pontificating about technology and how it's so great and important to humanity and we've always had it and in fact it predates humans. This is like saying otters busted open shells with rocks 5 million years ago so you should let your children eat nothing but takis all day long.So. Stupid. I contend that to make an argument that collapses a term so much, conflates it with more general concepts in order to purposely confuse the issue, is gaslighting and basically makes the term meaningless, cuts off in advance any real conversation that's actually going on. fuck you people. You all know that all the modern complaints about tech are talking about _modern tech_. Do a little pattern match in your head and stick "modern" in before every use of the word "technology" and then come back and discuss in good faith.#semantics #definitions #technology #techne
