@entreprecariat On a smaller scale these "friendly" designs in "productivity" apps that tell you you did well and deserve a break are similarly demented. "Take a moment."—Thanks for the mindful suggestion, Slack, but you're just one out of roughly one thousand outlets that emit things I need to do.

Learned yesterday that UK artist Heath Bunting, who has a history of community building, border crossing, wilderness survival, and running own infrastructure going back to earliest days of net art in the 1990s, has joined Twitter the day Elon Musk bought it. Sincerely in awe of this artistic gesture.

Folks discussing pros and cons of "quote toots" on the fediverse, in the meantime @bonfire implemented full-on foldable threads.

@bonfireI think it is important to remember that "quote tweets" are some pretty weird feature that the birdsite had to do as a compromise. Its a crutch to expand the audience and "engagement" for a single message, without introducing too much context—because context hinders circulation. On commercial social media, having every item as isolated as possible is ideal, because that enables easier computation and injection into different kinds of contexts. "Quote tweets" are one, and in my opinion, rather poor, way to facilitate communication. And user interface design doesn't only exist since 2015.

The left icon is supposed to mean "create" on YouTube, but to me it looks like a battery

Cool idea for art schools: block IPs of Adobe license verification servers for one week each semester to simulate the future.

I stopped following what Creative Commons the organization is doing these days, and only now found out they're supporting the argument that AI companies scraping random materials from the internet and then selling access to generated knockoffs, should be considered fair use. https://creativecommons.org/2023/02/17/fair-use-training-generative-ai/

@brewsterkahle This article makes some weird statements and conclusions. For instance, comparing "prompts" sent into some opaque image generator doesn't create some new kind of ownership and collaboration, it is for all practical purposes more like sharing queries to Google Maps. How does that change the supply chain of creating and maintaining maps? Also again there is a failure to suggest what artists should get out of using image generators to create public domain material, apart from "working with new technology." I'm not saying none of these issues can be addressed, but that article is taking the present state of ChatGPT and DALL-E as a starting point. Maybe for once the enforcement of copyright is not the issue here?
