@jec @Are0h I like to unpack a person's bias, their reason for holding their view. For example, a prison who is clearly a Nazi sympathiser, I would instead query what they know about National Socialism so we can unpack the ideas that inspired Adolf Hitler, before saying they think like Hitler or they are a Nazi sympathiser/racist, etc.

@jec in the Australian context you're right, I did live as someone < 1% for nearly 9 years overseas where I did a lot of language learning, so I can imagineBack to the Nazi example. There are people who are clearly well read on national socialism and are proud in it. For them I agree with youHow many people are like this? They heard a few things, a few memes, they don't know the harm because of the entitlement you're taking of, etc. One can say "Nazi", or patiently unpack the ideas and harm

@jec so, there needs to be a level of pre-existing bias, conspiratorial thinking, blaming minority groups for the problems of the world, etc. I agree. All of that, unpack it step by step. It might start with the first group they blameBut you can't get there if the first thing is "you Nazi", etc

@jec I'm not taking about tea and cookies with Nazis, I'm taking about online interactionsI was once the second language speaker, frustrated by the majority who has this or that biased view on different minorities. Philippine and Indonesian domestic helpers were "xxx", African people were "xxx", white people were "xxx", and often times, challenge it and have "but it's just like that" as the reply. I was angry at the overt bias and shared with other internationals. I know the feeling

@Marvin @jec a very good news story. Love itHate doesn't make haters drop their hate. We learn to drop our bias through having it challenged by seeing others are meaningful, of value, as another person with something to offer. Even if part of their ideas and identity are presently built on hate

@Marvin @jec I do understand people where for whom, at this present moment, something is too close to home. "XXXX" did something bad and it's currently affecting my sense of safetyVirtue signalling though, I'm not sure I agree. National Socialism for instance, hard to find anything good in it. There's a difference between the rusted on reader of Mein Kampf and someone who can be over time, de-radicalised. I understand that this might not be the job for the person in the first paragraph

@Marvin @jec I don't disagree, some are better positioned to do this than others

@stux in #BayswaterVictoria the #ALDI supermarket there can be quite lively at the check out, depending on who's going through. It's something I don't see much of in the land of self check out. Although, I do gravitate towards self check out elsewhere

If all #plastic packaging of fruit and vegetables ended tomorrow at the #supermarket, I'm sure we'd adjust. There would be paper bags, their fabric bags or just packing loose#ausPol #springStAs per usual, a little public pressure helpshttps://chng.it/4Tv6r8jfWV
