On OSX Preview.app, there's a neat "annotate" function which allows you to slap a signature (aka png) on top of a PDF, to "sign" it. You can also add free text too, and then re-export it as a new PDF with those changes.Does anybody know of a BSD port that does something similar?

Once again, I set up Microsoft Azure Storage & VM for a project, because "free developer account". And I've spent ~5h on this and got nowhere.World's largest s/w company has made a product more complicated than AWS/EC2 which is a phenomenal achievement.I should have banked the cash and used rsync or sftp.

@lightweight I have been using https://packet.net/ (now part of equinix) for most server deployments now. Bare metal, on demand, no K8s or similar over-engineering. Turns out small boxes are plenty fast these days when your i/o and network aren't artificially throttled. Running FreeBSD & Elixir on them is a delight.

you know the erlang code is old when you see an EMakefile and sinan.config lurking there. Dust off your old school skills!

@aral I'm waiting for the demise of systemd. The absurdity grows monthly, and the direction is less clear with each release. It's a brand, a very very tainted brand now.

The much-anticipated death of docker is coming closer and closer:Docker support in the kubelet is now deprecated and will be removed in a future release. The kubelet uses a module called "dockershim" which implements CRI support for Docker and it has seen maintenance issues in the Kubernetes community. We encourage you to evaluate moving to a container runtime that is a full-fledged implementation of CRI https://github.com/kubernetes/kubernetes/blob/master/CHANGELOG/CHANGELOG-1.20.md#deprecationGoogle has embraced, extended, and is extinguishing them.

ansible:- spend 5 minutes nutting out a good approach- spend 5 minutes getting v1 working- spend 30m fighting with YAML syntax to make the damn thing readable in a commit message- spend 5 minutes converting this into a shell script and wishing ansible was a proper programming language- spend 1h with whiskey re-examining my poor life choices

@tzycce https://restic.readthedocs.io/ is great, a little bit of a hurdle to get set up but if you do shell scripts this should be fine. let the big co's handle the cloud storage, you just pick what's cheapest for you. no VPS needed.remember you need to have a pruning strategy.

Many people were (apparently) surprised by the FireEye / SolarWinds hacks in the USA & elsewhere this year...This is from 2015. The only thing that's changing, is the number of vendors in the security space offering shit systems with shit code and shit complexity. You can't fix shit by putting more shit on top of your old dried-out shit.- patch your shit- no passwords if possible- 2FA or more, everywhere, all the time- secure all the boxes, not just servers/bastion hosts

oh yeah, and I honestly have no idea what to do anymore. If you *don't* have endpoint security set up, you'll probably void your corporate insurance. And if you *do*, you'll probably need that insurance.RunBSD? Stay Low and Under Cover? Avoid Computers and become a real-life Yak Herder?

@Gina I heard this is coming. I guess this is FB saying "we own and sell all your data" then? The should expect a billion-dollar fine coming their way for this, given the paucity of privacy protection, and lack of clarity on what we're giving up wrt privacy.Without WhatsApp, we're basically blocked from all school activities and stuff with our kids. That's how they're coordinated now. Also my partner's family is 95% WA. My niece and I are firmly on Threema, but nobody else will join.

@ParadeGrotesque programming is often a great way to unwind and detach from the day-to-day. But if you haven't got the spoons, don't feel guilty about it. You can find something else that lifts your spirits and doesn't need the keyboard just yet.
