@Mirk0dex I'm not sure why you have this take about the web, whoever thought that? TBL for sure not! what's your point anyway? have you ever thought about "evolution"? and javascript came soon after, it's been around for three decades now, so what? we should have stared these last decades at our screen with only a bunch of <a> tags in it because someone allegedly said the website should not evolve and remain a static bunch of chars? it doesn't work like that, mate.

@Mirk0dex I can agree on something, but not on the big picture. Life is dangerous in itself, the point is being aware of the risks and prepare if and when the danger arrives. your reasoning would have humans still live in caves. Besides,, why on earth then, for example, the US is still selling cars and guns like sweets as they kill 100Ks people every year? cigarettes anyone? drugs? mate, it's called evolution, progress, whatever. people get bored easily.

@selea it's not the cloud as a concept that's failed, it's how the service has been built: complicated and obscure on purpose, with most operations being just drag and drop reworking of command line instructions, and once you've been sucked in you can't get out anymore. This is also the fault of ignorant managers being conned by salespeople and mediocre IT. On top of it all the greediness of amazon & C.

@Linux_in_a_Bit @matt before "converting" to cloud, I bought using cashback promotions two new hp micro proliant one gen 8 for less than £100 one gen 9 for less than £200, still going great for home use only both filled with old hard disks. I went to look at the new version and it's £600+?!?! what the hell?!?

@rolle I normally use desktops/laptops with linux/windows, one dual boot. But for work I mostly use tools running on my cloud server (obviously linux 😏) and using browsers. Not sure here if the arch of the local machine is of any importance. You can say the same if you mostly use web apps. What's the point in having a specific OS/machine if most of the power/decision is done elsewhere?

@EU_Commission Portable devices are troves of private information, I'm sorry but I would never give it to anyone to repair it if I cant wipe it or take storage out beforehand, so ban the soldering and let us users do it ourselves at a fraction of the current costs. Why on earth should i send my phone to a lab to simply change the battery?!?In any case, if you don't force longer updates there is no point in repairing phones after the manufacturer updates closure window

@calculsoberic @zodmagus yeah, this whole AI tale looks to me like showing off, as usual when dealing with US all-white-males corporates, who has the bigger d!ck without considering if it actually works and howjust a push-push-push soulless job, computational speed and power coupled with exploitation of other people's resources and no rewardstrying to substitute the analog realiity with a digital approximatin will never win and we will only end up living in a boring world

@calculsoberic @zodmagus oh, for sure, don't get me wrong, I'm all about using computers, modeling and science, that's what I've been doing and using for 40 yearsbut this is getting ridiculous, it's just the typical marketing hype that comes every decade when big US companies can't exploit anymore the one from the previous, the only thing changing at every turn is exponential more power coupled with massive data exploitation

@selea I've been with #hetzner for a while, good cheap machines, but as of today, by coincidence, I've decided to close my account and move somewhere else, not for tech reasons, they're just horrible as support.good luck with them

@selea just to make the point, this is what I received out of the blue about the account of one of my clients I manage the servers for. The info they're talking about is my passport, which they already have anyway because I've been a customer of them for a few years. It's unbelievable! and the worst is that they refuse to give any explanation or engage in some conversation about it to solve the problem (which problem though?). How can you do serious business with this bunch of toddlers?

@selea London, but I'm Italian so I'm entitled to anything in the EU as european citizen, and the account is linked to an italian company doing business for 30+ years.I can't believe they are still in business doing these things.I can tell you though this is actually not news for me, B4 moving to them from Contabo a few years ago I read on twitter similar stories but I thought they were just fake news (competitors?). Apparently they are not.

@selea @finlaydag33k I think that's only true if you use the MyISAM engine, InnoDB tables support simultaneous write access by multiple sessions
