@h4890 before the invention of modern electric drills, you could buy a house through the mail, for about 40k (inflation adjusted), and build it yourself.Today, in the era of the internet, remote work and mass transit, with modern tools, machines and materials, it should be the norm instead of a quasi sci-fi idea. You could argue that modern homes are way more sophisticated but we don’t accept that argument for other products like computers. This is a direct result of government interference.

@gmcgath happy to defend anyone affected by any government overreachBUTIt doesn’t sound like Wikipedia has any issues with the regulation itself, they are only saying that it should not apply to *them*.Their rights deserve to be defended, but let’s not mistake them for allies.

@gmcgath they’re not cowards, they’re politicians.Their goal is not to help the people but to achieve power and retain it.And from that perspective, the “don’t interrupt your enemy when they’re making a mistake” is a way better tactic.

@h4890 they would’ve stabbed him if they didn’t have guns. Like they did to that conservative politician in the UK some years ago. They’re just low enough to kill him and then use his death as an argument.

If you believe people are too stupid or too weak-willed to eat healthy without the government forcing them to, why do you think they’re capable of making decisions about the country’s economy or geopolitics?

If I can’t be trusted not to drink too many Coca-Colas, why should I be able to have a vote on the policies that will rule industries I know nothing about, in parts of the country I’ve never even been to, and will heavily impact the lives of people I don’t know?

If someone can’t stop themselves from eating too many burgers without the prudent guidance of the State, how can we expect them to make good decisions about fiscal policy?

@h4890 that on top!But these people always see themselves as the ones that will be making the decisions.“Well, the people are stupid, but not me! I’m smart and thus I should tell them what to do.”

@h4890 I’m subscribed to the FEE and IEA RSS feeds. The IEA is very UK-centric, but still good. And if you’re into digital privacy, Proton’s feed is nice too.https://fee.org/feeds/fulltexthttps://insider.iea.org.uk/feedhttps://proton.me/blog/feedDo you have any recommendations? I’m always looking for new blogs.

@h4890 the IEA is perhaps the last bastion of free market thought in Europe. They were inspired by Hayek, so I would not consider them particularly spicy. Just enough to make your average leftie foam at the mouth.Which is precisely the type of think-tank that has a chance to actually achieve anything at the moment.Their podcast is also one of my favourites.

@h4890 I used to read ArsTechnica a lot. But I feel like since the last election half of their articles are just “Trump bad” and have very little to do with technology.

@h4890 in my experience people who work with and design complex systems tend to fall into 2 categories (if they are into politics):- We can plan and optimise the economy the same way we do with our technology - We can’t even get software to work as planned without unintended bugs and the economy is infinitely more complex than any of this, so we should leave it alone

@h4890 my personal policy is not to bring up politics at work, but I don’t lie or hide if pressed.I’ve also found over the years that normies and leftists are way less hostile to libertarian ideas if you present them from the more anarchist / anti-authoritarian angle.“I don’t like Trump/Farage/Lepen having the power to decide what my children learn in school” works better than “we should completely privatize education”.

If the flag of the country you moved to makes you feel “unwelcome” to the point of going out of your way to take them down, wtf are you doing there???This is not even about nationalism! You *chose* to move there, if you dislike it so much gtfo.No wonder people are getting more and more anti-immigration…

@h4890 because we’re a culture so demoralized, so indoctrinated into worshipping and submitting to authority that we desperately need to see that the people in charge are doing *something*.And that’s why regardless of who you voote for, you’re always getting a bigger State, more debt, more surveillance, more censorship. And nothing can be undone.

@liberdon I’m only a relatively new user, but I appreciate the effort. It was really nice to find a corner of the Internet with people that had similar ideas to me. Made me feel less lonely in an increasingly authoritarian and statist world. All the best 💔
