@futurebird I wasn't around in the 90s, but the main thing I look up is what gifts each character likes. I think I would enjoy the experimentation (though i can't make myself do it if i don't have to 😖)

@futurebird I feel the crime boss because I think the other's would be doubtful of the existence of something more powerful then themself, but I can imagine a crime boss who is humble enough to ask for helpCounterpoint: the crime boss might be catholicCounterpoint counterpoint: asking both sides for help is double the help

@futurebird @KimberlyN @blogdiva I find it fascinating when people who do it as a joke or because the video is about clickbait tactics talk about how it actually had an effectlike, it works no matter the topic, no matter the intended audience, no matter how relevent the reaction is, more people see it/watch it/keep watching it. absolutely wild

@futurebird That's awsome, thank you for being a teacher. I would very much like to teach one day, but I'm not cut out for it right now. Meanwhile I can try to write things and share what I know, resources etc. knowledge is a powerful tool, not a perfect one, but still.

I've been thinking a lot about how to teach people about computers (programming) recently, probly bc of@futurebird talking about what she does.I want to write a book that teaches about both how to program and also about computer hardware bottom up from first principles. The goal would be to essentially walk through the process of designing a cpu, then making an operating system for it, and finally having applications with sound and graphics.

@futurebird And maybe because of the connection to the fast moving "tech" space, maybe just because it's young, computer science is very forgetful.Maths failures are usually remembered as important proofs/disproofs, but computer science "failures" are just techniques that aren't used anymore, so developing the witten record of these things is important.

I knitted these fingerless mittens (mitts?) the other day, and I'm really happy with them. Unlike the scarf I did before, it's very easy to wear them casually, and they only took 24h from casting on to casting off for each hand. They seem very good for learning, fast results, only requires garter stitch and two straight needles, also useful. Basically you make a rectangle and sew the edges together, but leave a gap for the thumb. As it turns out, 90% of the warmth in fingerless gloves is in the palm (whoda thunk it) so these are almost as good, plus extra mobility without material between the fingies.Pattern that I used: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/easy-garter-stitch-mitts-2 #knitting

@N33R Bill gates has detached his image from windows, so now the only people to have matrix bullet time with are windows users and other linux users, we need to reinstall bill gates as number one linux enemy and The Big Windows Builder, so we can attack his 3d model with guns or swords

@futurebird This both leads to and seems partially the result of letting businesses dictate the course of computer education. Schools buy a set of PCs or laptops or ipads, and use whatever software that's advertised or comes with a student discount, because the alternative is relying on the one or two people internally who "know stuff" to engineer a whole setup of programs and system-admining whatever each class/teacher needs.Maybe schools could have some sort of dedicated "Computing in Education Engineer" who can figure out needs/requirements and weigh up options? Though it's hard, there isn't a great precedent for how to do it, and it easily could lead to bespoke setups that get phased out when no-one can fix them. But yeah, I've noticed some people find relying on companies, as opposed to individuals or smaller groups, for software stuff as giving themselves more independence, because even editing numbers in a text file is intimidating. Which isn't wrong, it's hard to navigate things when you don't feel like you understand them.I think figuring how to fix this situation is one of the most important software/computing problems, either by having software that reaches people where they're at, or finding ways to demystify computers to a wider audience. People need to be made more involved in their software choices and it's creation? but how, that's the problem.

@davidrevoy @peertube Also, I think another (more flattering) reason is your expressive use of shadows and highlights, the majority of artists seem to work with either a more muted or more cartoony colour palette. And image generating AIs, for various reasons, tend to have very bright highlights and dark shadows.I (and many, many other people) love your style though! Also your commitment to open-ness :blobcatheart:

@futurebird Statistics/probability/information theory might be the worst at this. Since everyone knows the notation isn't great, every other paper introducing a concept seems to have come up with it's own bespoke system, so every topic change comes with a new notation, which barely get an explanation. It confused me for years trying to understand what was going on.Notation has to be properly explained! It isn't self evident.

@andnull :blobcatgiggle: Part of me wants to have a license just so I can have totally unenforcable clauses, like "All violations of this licence must result in the violator being sent to the shadow realm."Or "By agreeing to this licence, you agree to stop critising people for using Python."But then I'd want to actually understand the legal implications. Which is I think one of the big problems with copyright, as it is, it's very hard for an ordinary person to communicate their expectations into something legally binding, or be able to tell if a given license actually does what they want. And also the fact that you have to actually take it to court for it to matter. Love to all social-good license writers for their efforts btwTRANS RIGHTS ARE HUMAN RIGHTS
