@neurovagrant @mttaggart @cR0w Another thing is too: This is an uncertain time when everyone is looking to everyone else for what to do. Any leadership you show right now, even if it just feels like signalling, is really important.This may seem like a paradox, but it's safer to speak up now, rather than later when things get worse, and when everyone is more afraid and in an even more precarious position with regards to contracts, jobs, etc.I'm speaking up right now about some issues in my workplace. I wish more white guys would speak with me and be brave alongside with me.

@tendstofortytwo exactlyyyyy the CRS points draw system is so perverse because it feels like an "objective measure" (the points calculation method), but at the same time it's really not objective at all because IRCC can set the cutoff for each draw to whatever they want, and create this artificial scarcityEven the most progressive recent PRs I know have a hard time resisting that resentment because the process is suffering and it is hard and it is designed to set up that false sense of competition. And it doesn't help that most of canadian society is clueless about the various immigration processes....it's hard watching people take for granted something that may have taken you 8+ years of living in canada to getIT IS ASS

Or, perhaps, you can follow my recent favourite fediverse account, @labor, which collects news about modern Chinese labour issues that you will never find on Chinese social media platforms.In general I think there is a huge lack of understanding among western users about how much Chinese social media and Chinese tech companies are intertwined with the government, a lack of understanding or engagement with Chinese social issues which are heavily censored on all Chinese social media platforms, and a mistake belief that "well, Chinese social media can't be much worse than the American ones". I had to mute the discourse around TikTok for my own sanity because there was so much complete misunderstanding around privacy, censorship, and the nature of these companies. It's like seeing people say "we don't want to use apps run by (american) fascists, so we will flock to an app that shares all its data with a fascist government, and actively censors all topics unfavourable to that government". It makes no sense.Of course, I think it is good that people are engaging with Chinese people, finally, as people, and not as just abstractions. I think it is also good that people have an incentive to learn my native language.
