I’m not sure what a viral post looks like here on Mastodon. It’s hard to gauge on terms of raw numbers. But I’ve had a few recently that have been reposted a whole bunch of times. The one commonality: my mentions are full of discussion, not rage. The discourse is thoughtful. This is in stark contrast to certain other online venues.

@baldur I once posted on Twitter that it would be nice for cyclists to offer the same consideration for pedestrians that they would like from cars. This came after one again went within probably 5cm of running down our small dog, belting along at top speed on a path from the station, next to a road *with* a cycle path. My mentions were unusable for days. I got everything up to actual threats of physical violence. Maybe that could happen here too, but it just doesn’t feel like it.

@clive Perhaps brains break on seeing a C name. I’d say roughly 90% of folks from the US pronounce my name in a weird way. (Creg.)

@bynkii @clive Same. Multiple times in both ears. Right ear is worse. Tends to be worse in winter. Sometimes I also have a low rumbling bass, like a car engine turning over. I use White Noise+ on iPhone at night now. https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/white-noise-relaxing-sounds/id1129993224

@clive @bynkii There are quite a few good ones. I particularly like White Noise+ because the interface is really smart – a grid you drag sounds on to and decide how loud/complex you’d like the loops to be. Plus it has a single IAP buyout vs a monthly charge only. I also sometimes use BFT’s white noise (mountain rains) when working as a focus aid, again to drown the tinnitus.

I reiterate my previous thinking that school uniforms are outdated and should be consigned to history: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/sep/25/why-do-we-force-our-kids-into-ties-and-blazers-when-not-even-bankers-wear-them-any-moreBy all means provide guidance regarding clothes. But kids should dress for comfort and the weather. And we should be long past dated ideals about gender conformity.

@vik I wore one to a friend’s wedding, because he specifically asked and knew I didn’t usually wear one. I didn’t wear one to my own wedding.

@apzpins I had someone recently say that for them the PS3 is retro. My first console was an Atari 400. :/

No-mow May not very exciting compared to last year as yet. Half the front garden isn’t doing anything. Too much rainfall, I imagine. Hopefully it’ll pick up a bit if by some miracle this week’s forecast comes to pass. (Which is very much in “believe it when I see it” territory.)

Just saw someone whose Google account was shuttered. They’d been… using Sheets to track movies they’d watched.A question people should ask themselves, but rarely do: What would you do if, tomorrow, Google, Apple, Microsoft, Dropbox, and every other cloud provider you use closed your account without warning? Then maybe spend some of today safeguarding against that eventuality.

Then: UK govt loses mindNow: Wikipedia loses legal challengeNext: UK loses Wikipedia access? This legislation is way, way beyond porn and stated scope. Really starting to get tired of the internet claim that the video game crash obliterated gaming and then the NES swooped in to save us all. That’s to some degree the case in the USA (although not the entire story), but isn’t remotely the experience people in eg Europe had at the time. The mid-1980s was a fantastic time for video games, with an industry in rude health across a range of formats. Here in the UK, the NES barely registered at first. And we didn’t see a crash.
