Announcing the first release of #OpenCrystalCaves, an #OpenSource reimplementation of the #DOS platformer game, #CrystalCaves! https://congusbongus.itch.io/opencrystalcaves/devlog/764814/initial-releaseThis release is barely playable - you can move around in the main level and enter/exit barren, unimplemented levels. Stay tuned for more to come!#ScreenshotSaturday #GameDev #RetroGaming

In my spare time I maintain osgameclones.com, a curated listing of over 1000 #OpenSource game clones and remakes. I usually see projects fall off and get abandoned, but recently I learned that OpenSA, a remake of the obscure 1999 🇦🇺 #RTS Swarm Assault, was completed shortly after being added in 2021!https://dzierzan.itch.io/opensaIt's great to see open source games reach the finish line, especially those showcasing odd gems like this. Made with the #OpenRA engine, pretty cool!#GameDev #RetroGames

I've never played Swarm Assault despite also having the idea of an RTS with insects and other creatures so this should have been up my alley had I known about it. Definitely going to check this one out! It appears the game is discontinued but available as abandonware online. As someone who has also made reverse-engineered games, it's trickier than most people think, so kudos to the dev team for pulling it off!

Here's another thing I found from osgameclones.com that I thought would be worth broadcasting: did you know that the isometric helicopter shooters Desert Strike / Jungle Strike only have one #OpenSource clone?https://github.com/AMDmi3/openstrikeOpenStrike is an early project to recreate this classic game. Sadly it is unplayable and has been abandoned for 10 years, due to difficulties in reverse engineering. But it's perfect for the right #gamedev to adopt...#RetroGames #cpp #sdl #DOS

...because:- it's off to a great start - many parts like decoding the sprites is already done, as shown in the screenshot- it's a great game with no other open source clones/remakes- the project owner is a very active devSo for the right person, it's the perfect project to adopt next! If you're good with C++, gamedev, and/or reverse engineering proprietary 90s file formats, this could become a really cool open source game project. I'd do it myself if I weren't busy with projects already...

I'm not just a fan of the Strike series of games, having played them back in the day; the games, specifically Urban Strike, is special to me, because of this picture from the manual. The team photo is the thing that planted the idea of getting into gamedev all those years ago. As a kid not knowing anything about it, making games may as well have been black magic, but this photo - a bunch of happy, normal-looking guys and girls - showed me that if they can do it so can I!

Made a release for #CDogsSDL with a spiffy new high score system!https://cxong.github.io/cdogs-sdl/release/2025/03/08/c-dogs-2.3.0.htmlThis adds time taken, kills, accuracy, favorite gun and the player face. So if you want to challenge yourself to a speed run, pacifist run, or 100% accuracy, this system can help you do it all.#ScreenshotSaturday #GameDev #OpenSource

they say in war there's a bullet with your name on it but in video games, every single bullet has the shooter's name and gun on it. This is how you can track things like kills, assists and accuracy. It's like what they say - any sufficiently complex game becomes a database!

While updating osgameclones.com I came across another surprising discovery: the open source #MTG clone Forge now supports an adventure mode, where you explore a world map, collect new cards and abilities and challenge other AI opponents.https://card-forge.github.io/forge/Sound familiar? This is exactly the gameplay for Shandalar, making this perhaps the first open source clone of this awesome retro game! I'll be looking forward to trying it out myself.#OpenSource #RetroGames

Super 2D Noah's Ark's first episode only has three levels - this is rather short for a Wolf3D clone but it is biblically accurate, since the "real" ark also had 3 levels. But the game has 5 more episodes with 4-7 levels each.My headcanon is that the stress of the animals escaping and everything took a toll on Noah and he became a bit loopy, so the other episodes are his fever dreams.More dev updates to come!#GameDev #ScreenshotSaturday #CDogsSDL #OpenSource

Drew the head and hence (almost) completed this silly ostrich enemy for Super 2D Noah's Ark! Although at these tiny resolutions I've noticed it can also pass as a giant duck. Be afraid#GameDev #ScreenshotSaturday #PixelArt #OpenSource #CDogsSDL

@foone some also used obscure compression formats. I had an important breakthrough once I figured out one game was using some type of self-extracting exe wrapper to run the actual exeAnd of course years before stuff like gif and mp3 were available, everyone was homebrewing their own media formats

@futurebird I once mentored a learning Python workshop and we wasted an hour trying to install it on windows and figured out McAfee was blocking python.exe. The whole experience makes me irrationally angry to this dayThanks for the tip about thonny, gonna be passing it on!

Earlier in Super 2D Noah's Ark I added an antelope, which is just a sheep with longer legs and horns. Now I've added a giraffe, the boss of episode 2, which is just an antelope with a longer neck, and instead of horns they're called ossicones - a word that my spell checker doesn't think exists. The things you learn as a #gamedev! Also giraffes are so dopey when sleeping#CDogsSDL #ScreenshotSaturday #PixelArt #RetroGames #OpenSource

And now for something completely different - the 3D maze screensaver from Windows 95, ported to a few modern platforms, (including macOS by me)https://github.com/headshot2017/3dmazeIt's also playable! But I gotta admit I’m no good at 3D mazes!

Completed level 7 in #OpenCrystalCaves, which looks like an overgrown jungle full of vines and moss and hazards like spikes (same colour as the moss), an inert rock which looks exactly like a rock monster seen earlier, and for the first time, a wall monster that pops out when close! Very sneaky, game! The best part is the many chests that open with a satisfying sound (I think it sounds like “buuurger”). Implemented the bird enemy in #OpenCrystalCavesThis is no simple enemy - it drops eggs on you, which normally break open and leave a hazard on the ground, but 10% of the time it hatches into a little bird! So the effort was 4x normal (bird+egg+spill+birdlet). That 10% chance is a doozy - most players won’t expect it because the first few times they come across the bird it will never happen. This game loves surprises!#GameDev #OpenSource #CrystalCaves #RetroGames #DOS #ScreenshotSaturday
