@tante what do you gain by making it a question of individual ethics? it probably works if you want to change a specific situation (plus it's nicer knowing the people around you can afford to care and do so), but for more than that i don't think it's a very useful argument

@tante it gets even more absurd when utils are introduced. everything, no matter how high-dimensional or complex, is reduced to a value on a one-dimensional scale, pretending that's enough to make meaningful comparisons of pretty much everything? at that point it's just neoclassical economics very thinly disguised as philosophy

@paupowpow A new study from researchers at Northeastern University, in collaboration with scientists from MIT and the University of Glasgow, investigated what happened when a group of domesticated birds were taught to call one another on tablets and smartphones. The results suggest that video calls could help parrots approximate birds’ communication in the wild, improving their behavior—and, likely, their well-being—in their owners’ homes.

@malteengeler i have heard the idea of "user unions" being pitched a couple of times. i'm not 100% sure what this would look like, but i think including groups with other interests in the decision making process is crucial.see also https://resonate.coop/ that try to do this for a cooperative music streaming service (disclaimer: not affiliated and i have no idea how well this works).

@winnie it's not about discord specifically, more that i'm afraid that the motives of companies like discord or slack are adverse to the interests of many of the communities that rely on them when viewed on a larger time frame. this is basically what http://ascii.textfiles.com/archives/5509 is about, and really what i'd try to avoid, like so: https://post.lurk.org/@computersandblues/110063161665886239

@malteengeler i agree. i also don't see how that would work out economically. individual pieces of data are worth mere pennies; it only becomes valuable in bulk

@a i think this is mostly because compression + snapshots + send/receive is amazing. :) i have the same experience with zfs. the horror stories i've read about btrfs mostly tell tales of data loss. i've never experienced that with btrfs but it also made me pick zfs for the time being. maybe bcachefs will do this right in the future without the confusing licensing issues attached to zfs

hot take: "listen to the science" is hard because deciding which sciences, and doing good science, and telling good science from bad science is hard

i'm really excited to show https://compost.party to the world! it's a web server running on an old, broken phone, getting energy from the sun using one of those portable solar chargers that you may also have lying around.it's a real oddity and a real beauty

Hi fellow permacomputer! If you're in #berlin next Sunday and interested in sustainable computing, you should come to the #permacomputing meetup! We're meeting on 11 August at 19:00 at @offline. We'll have a chat about https://compost.party, a weird web server that I built from scraps that were lying around and that's running completely on solar power. Take that AI data centers! Please join us for an informal discussion of ideas and real-world practices around Permacomputing. Non-nerd-identified, newbies and perma-curious are especially welcome!Bring food and snacks to share if you want, see you there!

the tldr of the linked article is: there is currently so much money in ai and data centers that increasingly you're looking at an enterprise-only market (consumer prices rising, brands get cancelled, hardware design changes, etc). https://www.xda-developers.com/consumer-hardware-is-no-longer-a-priority-for-manufacturers/the article itself is low on numbers, but i read it as another indicator of how current genAI (fundamentally beefy computations & models that are non-trivial to train and run for you and me) is changing what we knew as personal computing and centralizes the means of computation.
