@futurebird I live alone but I've noticed I'm inconsistent about this when it comes to work (I work at home, remotely). Sometimes when I'm having trouble focusing I'll notice the most trivial ping from a coworker suddenly wakes me up -- the brain fog disappears like it never happened. Other times I can't wait for everybody else to "go away" (i.e. end their work days) so I can work after hours in "peace". It's not logical but I like the option to call it "nuanced" rather than "being weird". 🙂

@futurebird There are so many cans of worms, so to speak, around the notion of putting oneself in another creature's shoes. We suck massively at it even with other humans. I suspect we vary a lot in our ability to conceive of minds different from our own, and that this compounds the problem. How can you have a discussion with me about our cognitive differences if the very notion of cognitive differences doesn't compute for me, because that's one of the differences we have in the first place?

@futurebird Strongly agree. There's something about being able to say "I see what you did there" that only enhances the experience IMO. Same with any art form -- there's a ton of pleasure in looking for the "what you did".

@futurebird Oh, and I know what you mean about when something you say or do risks getting you lumped in with a crowd you do not align with. Whaddaya gonna do. All I can think of is to laugh at the George Constanza-ness of it -- imagine the comic lengths I would go to in order to "fix" people's impressions of me. Which of course would only make things worse.

@futurebird @llewelly I've experienced free above-ground transit in three cities that I've visited, and was surprised how much I loved it. I didn't care so much about the money I saved, it was more that somehow the city felt like a much nicer place to be.
