Apple loyalist: Here's my 3-hour podcast gushing over the fact I just bought a brand new $1,200 M2 MacBook Air--to replace the M1 Mac I bought a year ago--because it never makes any fan noise.Me: Happily typing on a 8-year-old $150 refurbished Dell laptop with the fans whirring constantly. That's the sound of freedom, my friends.

If you've read the blog, you know that I usually name each post after the products demonstrated in-studio. I think the working title for the next post may be favorite so far:"Computer Chronicles Revisited, Part 70 β€” 101 Macros for Lotus 1-2-3 and Unnamed Lotus Symphony Adventure Game"

One year ago on "Computer Chronicles Revisited," I looked at an early 1985 episode, the second devoted to computer games. One notable guest was Activision's David Crane, who demonstrated "Ghostbusters" for the C64. Another guest was Kathe Spracklen, who developed the Sargon III chess program. My favorite tidbit from the research was that Spracklen and her husband sold the original Sargon for $15 as source code. They actually sent you a Xeroxed copy of the code!https://smoliva.blog/post/computer-chronicles-revisited-027-sargon-iii-millionaire-ghostbusters/

I've been keeping a running list on the blog of all the software that Paul Schindler reviewed. I always planned to do standalone posts about some of these programs. And I'm happy to take requests or suggestions. So if you have any thoughts, feel free to peruse the list and reply to this post!https://smoliva.blog/post/computer-chronicles-revisited-special-004-paul-schindlers-software-reviews/

@Ricardus Given the regular posts normally run about 5,000 words, I usually don't take up additional space with looking at Paul's reviews. But there are some interesting items that merit attention.

A few years ago, I gave a retired neighbor an old laptop with Linux installed. They just needed something to do email and web stuff. One day they called and asked me how to update their system. I tried to walk them through the GUI updater for their DE, which was difficult because I was on a different setup. They were confused by the menus and controls. Finally, I just told them how to open a terminal and update from the CLI. That clicked. Not a ringing endorsement of modern UI design. πŸ˜›

Of the many ways John Sculley used to anger the Apple faithful, perhaps none was so infuriating as his insistence on using D-list Batman villains as code names for OS releases.

I'm reviewing another travelogue episode, this time about PC clones made in Taiwan. This line made me laugh: "The company's founder has been called the Steve Jobs of Taiwan..."C'mon, Stewart, that's not fair. This guy is wearing a suit, looks like he showered within the past week, and he's been talking for a good 30 seconds without screaming at a subordinate.

I know some of you on here are likely 1980s text adventure fans. Anyone have experience with a 1986 EA release called "Thomas M. Disch's Amnesia"? It's featured in an upcoming "Computer Chronicles" episode I'll be recapping, and I wanted to get some insights from people who--unlike me--actually like text adventures. πŸ˜›

Konica at COMDEX '86: "We've developed a 10 MB floppy disk!"Huh. Interesting."We call it the embedded servo position information system!"Okay, now that just sounds like something Joel made up on the Satellite of Love.

Started work on the next blog post. This will be for a November 1986 episode on project management software. So prepare yourselves for exciting descriptions of Gantt charts. There's also a feature on a failed George Lucas business venture, oddly enough. On the lighter side, Paul Schindler found an Atari ST game that he really liked!

The bad news is my next blog post has led me to review some fairly annoying pre-World War I books on labor-management organization theory. The good news is these books were all published before 1923 so at least they're all in the public domain and available without restriction on Archive.org!

Earlier I mentioned "Business Simulator," a business simulation program that Stewart Cheifet heartily recommended on a 1986 "Computer Chronicles" episode. After downloading a copy and extracting the source files, I think I see why Stuart found this program so appealing. πŸ˜†

It's disappointing there was never a "Murder, She Wrote" text adventure game back in the day. Ah, well. RIP, Mrs. Fletcher.

@Ricardus There was a TNG novel some years back that featured Moriarty β€œescaping” and wreaking havoc. Wonder if that was an inspiration.
