@mcdanlj @gat It’s still a lot of money. I haven’t ordered anything yet, and my preference would be for the Prusa because I believe they will make a quality machine. For $1500 I can have pretty much all of the features and I don’t have to have the project of building something before I can use it for my projects.

If colleges really wanted to prepare engineering students for their careers, they would have a class where the professor assigns a project with all of the requirements spelled out. Then, on the day it's due, the professor changes the requirements, and you don't get to rework it. Then, they complain to the other professors that you never do projects correctly.

After seeing the #MastodonButton tag a few weeks ago, I was inspired to #3dprint some pins for my lunch bag to show off the different #foss tools I proudly use. So, I used Inkscape and FreeCAD to model these pins from SVGs scaled to match the pinbacks I could buy. There are more I should make, but this seemed like a good start.#fosstodon, #freecad, #inkscape, #ubuntu#3dprinting

I made a couple more #foss pins for my lunch bag. This time, PrusaSlicer and Brave web browser. More to come!Fun with #3dprinting!

I can totally appreciate the absolute disdain in the voices of all of the Southwest gate agents as they reiterate the limits on what you can carry on the plane. They sound like they’re, justifiably, on the verge of smacking people who try to skirt the rules. I always want to go up to these people and ask “Is this your first day?”I reckon that the percentage of first-time flyers is pretty low.

@lps If it were me, I would use STEP format. It seems to be the most universal for solid geometry that you will want to edit later easily.

@lps I’ve imported lots of STEP files into FreeCAD plenty of times so that I could modify them or just include them in an assembly. When I publish models from FreeCAD, I typically provide the STEP file as well so that others can import them easily into the CAD software of their choice.

@lps Ah. Remember that a STEP file is a dumb solid. The feature tree is not retained. That is what makes it a universal format. It effectively gets locked in time when you export. You get a solid that can easily be edited with new features. SolidWorks has a feature recognition tool that tries to recreate a feature tree from a STEP file, but it’s a best guess, and your mileage may vary.

@tk @cycling @mastobikes I did my first cyclocross race in college in 1999 when our collegiate cycling team put on a race on campus in the snow in January. I didn’t buy a real cross bike until 2002. Since then, I’ve been doing it every year (except for Covid) and it’s been my most successful racing discipline. I love it!

@MLE_online Admittedly, I get annoyed at people that extol the metric system as being inherently better because it’s “base 10” which is “easier”. Because I deal in machined parts, I always want to ask why 6.375 inches is “worse” than 161.925 mm? Once decimals are involved, does it really matter? I just happen to know the decimal/fraction equivalents pretty well because of a lot of experience.

@futurebird It’s engineers, too. I worked in a glass plant in the early 2000’s, and there was literally a device on one of the machines called the “dog leg spanker”. The fellow engineer that I learned about it from somehow said it to me with a straight face.

@mcdanlj 😳 That is horrific. I’ve never printed with ABS, and this is the kind of thing that makes me never want to.

Even though I’ve been using the Assembly3 workbench in Realthunder’s branch of #FreeCAD for years, I decided to mess around with the new Assembly workbench in v1.0. All I can say is that I’m finding it to be an improvement on what I’ve been used to, which was already good. Yet another reason to celebrate this v1.0 release and all of the hard work of the dev team!It was so nice to drop in fasteners and change their length after assembly constraints were applied. Workbenches working together!

@thelinuxcast Why is it that so many “promotional” images of Linux focus so much on Terminal windows full of text?? Like, average users aren’t on the command line all day. Then, everyone wonders why more people don’t use Linux…. 🤔I avoid using the command line unless absolutely necessary, regardless of OS, even though I know how.
