#linux and #emacs have been one of the most interesting changes in my life recently. When starting to try out Linux in November of 2019, I never expected it would lead me to care so much about privacy and freedom. Which led me to #emacs and #orgmode. Incredibly powerful and yet minimal tools made openly and freely for everyone. And now I care so much about giving to others the power that technology can provide without the insane tracking and cost that proprietary solutions ask.

@galdor @drdelle yup exactly! Sure it may have eaten lots of resources and on my machine it IS probably one of the biggest memory consumers, but when compared to the behemoths around it's negligible. I don't need a whole browser for a text editor and another for my note app and another for my messenger. Electron has done this to the world and it's getting awful. Then on top just look at the complexity of the competition.

@adham I did this for a while. Decided to change because I'm not good at the literate part of literate programming I think. But it worked well.

@galdor @ringtailringo @daviwil more so,I appearances matter more to many businesses. Fear drives them to often make the safe bet. I do get why you say that tho. Lack of things built on top often make lisp stacks need to implement a lot of their own stuff.

@galdor @ringtailringo @daviwil although, arguably the expressiveness and discoverability of lisps mean that it's quite fast to do that.

@lps yea as long as they have access to the same underlying directories. You go into the settings and create an external read only library. This syncs it, but you'll have to delete photos from nextcloud I think. I could be a little wrong how it all works tho.

@musicmatze I've tried. Not successfully. I like the simplicity of slint, but I don't think it's that great to work with if you're going to be doing anything real major with it. If it's purely ui and fairly simple it'll work, but they use their own structs inside their DSL for everything the ui needs access too and you can't add methods to those structs. So you have you do some duplication or monkeying around to make methods for that data in the rust side.

@musicmatze as far as cosmic goes, once you get how the elm architecture works in it, it's really nice to work with. It just makes things much cleaner and everything can be composed. The only downside is layout is a bit trickier and some of the widgets aren't as full fleshed as I'd like, but with how the core is so much nicer, I would much rather work in it. Iced, which cosmic is downstream from, has some awesome debugging and developer tools in the works too.

@musicmatze note that I tried slint, but gave up after a while. With cosmic it's stuck with me and I'm still building my app, but it's going well thus far.
