@yvan @stfn There are a few different ones. One i've seen has a little OLED screen on it too :)I've got 3 Pis with PoE hats and they seem pretty reliable. The only thing is they have fans on and do seem to get a little warm for some reason, so you may need more airflow in your your case than normal.

@yvan @stfn Yeah, although it's from 48V down to USB voltages, so should be fairly efficient.PoE is great.I've got a few CCTV cameras, Wireless APs, some small switches, and a couple of PoE to USB converters, which means a lot fewer cables :)I would like to find some PoE lighting, and people keep going on about it for office buildings, but i've yet to see any products, which is annoying.

@stfn There's this: https://www.slimq.uk/products/usb-c-to-dc-adapter-to-lenovo-slim-tipNo idea if it is any good, or if 65W would be enough. Then there's this:https://shop.poetexas.com/products/bt-usbc-a-pdI bought one, but not actually used it yet.I hope it's good, it wasn't cheap.Hopefully I will get to use it with my laptop in the garden in summer when it's nice and warm π

@stfn Ah, can't that work with your m625q too?Yes, it is a bit excessive for what it is.I don't see how "education" can afford that for every student πMaybe schools in Texas are loaded π

@brodokles.bsky.social I guess search is a biggie, and easy to change. There are quite a few decent options now, if you haven't tried them:Duckduckgo.comEcosia.org@kagihq @marginaliaStartpage.comEtcIf you feel like running one yourself, SearxNG is a good aggregator, and it can search the fediverse too :)

@stfn Absolutely, but it's difficult. Why should we (the west) tell other countries they aren't allowed to have cars, computers, Air Con, nice houses etc?We need to lead by example and show how our short-termism has created this mess. This isn't going to happen as there is too much inequality in the western countries, and poorer portions of our own population also want what the more well-off already have.I don't know what the answer is, other than "we're already fucked so it's too late".Man that's depressing, sorry π’ That won't stop me trying my best personally though.....

@diffrentcolours did you manage it in the end?I use wireguard between my phone and my home connection. It's very stable, and is a very small config file on both sides.I have 2 profiles on my phone - one that just routes to my home network and uses my home DNS (a pihole), and a second that routes everything through my home connection.I used to terminate #WireGuard on a linux desktop (OpenSuSE), but now I have an #OPNSense firewall, and terminate on that instead.I love it :)

@internetarchive I used it most recently to find the fix to a problem:A forum port mentioned a page on the original manufacturers' website that could fix my problem, but the link was broken, and the original manufacture seemed to have purged any details about the document ID, even by doing a search directly on their website. In the end i found the original page on the Internet Archive, and the instructions fixed my problem π₯³ The crappy manufacturer in question was APC π‘

@peter The screenshot mentions a "High Desparation" flag, like what @pluralistic mentioned for care worker apps in the US.Seriously shitty (amongst all the other shitty stuff in there)

The end of an era - I cancelled my colo service for my #SelfHost server last week, as I have enough bandwidth at home to run everything in the "#HomeLab".I've had a colo server for over 20 years (2 different 1U servers, and both have been pretty reliable.First it was in Telehouse London, then a dudes garage in Maidenhead, which then morphed into Pulsant in Maidenhead. It taught me good discipline about upgrading things remotely, and keeping an eye on security, as it was over 100miles away, which would have been a right PITA to fix if a reboot failed.By the time I turned this one off, its uptime was over 800 days.Thank you for your service, little server π I'm not sure what im going to do with it now, apparently the RAID controller only supports up to 2TB drives, and it's really noisy. The previous one was the cheapest SuperMicro one I could find at the time, which was ~Β£800.I got this one free from @bobbycc, whos work was chucking it out, so it's been well used - Thanks, I appreciate it!There's nothing physically wrong with it though... π’

@rms It's such a shitty system."Pay online"..... how about actually showing the address you want us to use? Also, you can't find out if you actually owe anything - if you are near the times when it's free, you've just got to guess.Once I was travelling and a mate paid for the return trip.Months later I got a penalty notice. It turned out that the 2 trips my mate had paid for actually paid for 1 trip I'd made months before.I have no idea why I didn't get a penalty charge for that trip, as you have to pay for it within 2 days or something.Luckily I don't have to use it often, but it sucks.
