@cwebber Dominent member of the w3c announces "Fuck standards, actually, it's just me and my anti-antitrust blanket now"

@dajbelshaw When it comes to the web though, there is now no alternative. Google run the w3c and have recently announced they will start banning all but their and Mozilla's engines from Google products, Mozilla are 99% dependent on Google for revenue and are forever playing catch-up. No other browser engine can keep up with deliberately rapid-shifting standards. There'd been a steady downward trend in practical browser-engine choice: only 3 remain. The world wide web is dead.

@dajbelshaw That's not to say "hope is lost" it's to say "hope is elsewhere" - the next "web" insofar as the spirit and dream of the web, is perhaps to be found in #Gemini, though I have issues with the "get-only" design philosophy and I think they need to anticipate the likelihood that someone will introduce client side scripting like it or not, if it gets popular. But it has the look and feel of an early alternative.Mozilla are captured in the dying WWW. I think they're done.

@marsxyz Oh and I forgot all the US Mil experiments with electrically induced flow states, which amount to "when we stick this special robo-helmet on our soldiers they get ridiculously good at shooting things and their critical thinking functions take a back-seat, and we think they might be more resistant to being traumatised, too"But, uh, China is uhdoing something

@cypnk There *is* an inverse correlation between ghost sightings and microwave ownership though. And lots of old "haunted" houses are ones lacking a microwave or where the microwave isn't in use.Maybe Microwaves are ghost-repellent, by flooding the EMF spectrum ghosts usually use to spook through?Likewise now for wifi. Maybe real ghostbusters carry cantennas

@mmu_man @nathand Guy accuses Syncthing but they are already opt-in WRT telemetry and crash reporting. Kinda spammy with the issue reporting approach too it seems.Tools that spy should be rejected, asking creeps nicely isn't a winning strategy IMHO

@cwebber I think the Fediverse suffers from not even fully exploring allow/block lists, because the lead dev of Mastodon won't consider implementing allowlist-based federation.TBH this is the main thing putting me off running a server of any scale: that my server will automatically federate with anyone I haven't explicitly blocklisted. How can I ensure I'm protecting my users, and not enabling abusers, without constant labour?Federation should be built on human relations of trust and consent.

@kawaiipunkMind not to call it "censorship" when nazis get deplatformed though. It isn't censorship but their whole argument depends on it being censorship, because then they can invoke freezepeach.Factually, they can continue to spout racist shit. Facebook and Twitter (and us) are entitled not to amplify that by offering it a social media platform. Censorship would control their actual right towards speech or writing, not access to voluntary publishing agreements.

@mike @piggo @Gina Aye, we have a few chickens and if they get grass and fresh leaves it makes a huge difference. We really wanted to free-range them when we moved to our current home but they're obsessed with the road and kept stopping traffic 😬

@InvaderXan It's reckoned that their screech may have been one of the common sources of the mythical "Banshee's wail" that, in Irish lore, signified that someone was due to die that night. The Banshee was a "Ban Sí", a fairy woman, and was rarely described. My understanding was that she wasn't believed to *cause* death but to be a harbinger of death.
