@anna first part:PIA's parent is basically the holding company for a tech bro who got rich off bitcoin and buys things when he's bored.Some consequences:It doesn't help the companies that it buys. One of them just got dumped and is going out of business again with no prior warning to its employees.Buying up bits of ecosystems that the owner likes centralizes those ecosystems. LTM's involvement in IRC is a great example, though they started dropping of those now too (see also (1))They hired Mark Karpeles. And made him a CTO. @anna second part:Most people don't need a VPN, it's just swapping spying by their ISP for spying by a centralized for-profit company based in the USA. Strongly consider not using anything and assume your network is hostile regardless (so use HTTPS, etc.)Use Tor for situations where you need to hide your origin or destination. Yes, it's sponsored by the US government. No, that doesn't mean much, it's sponsored because the USG uses it too.Use anything from Tor to sketchy free VPNs/proxies for filesharing, rights providers don't care enough to get around even basic indirection. I'm not willing to endorse any of them, they're all sketchy.2/2

Been worrying a lot recently that I'm toxic and make everyone's lives worse by constantly getting embroiled in drama and acting like a bitch.Started leaving chat places again but now I've decided that I'm never gonna stop being bad online unless I get practice in interacting with people and treating them like humans that deserve better than my usual shitty behavior.Guess we'll see how well that works out.(Pls don't comment telling me I'm not toxic I don't want hugpile rn)

@pounce yeah, kernel complication is a huge pain (unless you use genkernel or something, which i don't 'cause it confused me). i sat down and worked through it years ago and have just been keeping the .config backed up since then.

watching a (non-fediverse) volunteer moderation team spin its wheels for a very long time as people slowly get burned outvolunteering emotional labor is hard. doing it in an environment dominated by hand-wringing and inaction where you feel dis-empowered to effect change is 10 times harder. doing it when some of the userbase wants to kill people like you and gets to stick around anyway is 10 times harder againonly solutions i can come up with are radical decentralization of online spaces fediverse-style, or making moderation paid (w/ good mental health benefits). neither are good solutions for large traditional (non-decentralized) volunteer comms systems

the US invaded Iraq for the second time when i was a teenager. we felt helpless to stop it, but we protested. we protested our little white middle class hearts out. it didn't matter.uncountable wars later, we're still helpless, and now there's a good chance that lots and lots of people are going to die again for no reason.and the more people die in police actions by US-led coalitions to enforce world peace, the more my heart hurts deep inside me at the murder, and the more helpless i feel, and the more i agree with radicalized left politics, and it profoundly distresses me that maybe the only way to end this is more violence
