A question I’ve not answered for myself yet: with the fediverse/ActivityPub-compatible services, is it better to use one account and encourage federated folks on other instances to follow your one account, or to use separate accounts on separate services?Originally, I thought it made sense to e.g. replace Twitter with Mastodon and Instagram with Pixelfed, but should I just share photos on Mastodon? The photo-centric UI of Pixelfed is nice, but then it feels weird to have two separate accounts.

Is there a reason the Mastodon Android app has had active development but no release for months? Several fixes plus big new headlining features in Mastodon 4 just aren’t here. Someone opened an issue and it was closed saying it wasn’t the place to ask.https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon-android

Everyone, I get it, you prefer a different client. That has no relevance to this post. I also have Tusky and I prefer the official app, and even if I didn't, the question remains! 🤦‍♂️

I’ve been on quite the smart watch ride from the Kickstarter edition original Pebble to the Moto 360, then Fossil Sport, then Pebble Time Round, and now back to the OG Pebble.I’m ready for something that looks as nice as the Pixel Watch!

While I get the reasons to not have robust text search built into Mastodon (both technical and community), I sure do miss being able to easily search my own posts to dig up something old that I want to revisit/add to. Especially old threads.

I am strongly considering running a family-only Mastodon instance since I own the blaede.family domain. It would be a pretty neat vanity handle, plus it would solve the “which server??” question for my immediate family, at least. 🤔Also, I am getting a bit fed up with this instance crashing and burning every time something notable happens over on birdsite. Then again, I don’t want to be a sysadmin. Do the hosting companies out there let me be entirely hands-off and just pay them every month? 😅

@scuttlefield @cam I will forever campaign for Mastodos which is the official app source code, plus features that were rejected upstream, plus more up to date.https://sk22.github.io/mastodos/

Hm, I like the idea of using a website’s theme-color on desktop, but I don’t know how I feel about the naive implementation I prototyped here in GNOME Web.It might make more sense to just color the tab itself, but then it could start to look really busy. Thoughts?

Lack of filter support in the official Mastodon Android app has me out here dodging spoilers left and right. Exclusively using the web client until I watch the #Andor finale…But let’s just say: I’m bummed about the state of development of the app; no releases in over four months, and not really accepting of community contributions.Top-down design and dev is their right, but also, it only really works if you can actually deliver in sync with the service itself.#meta #OpenSource

Free/open source software is free, as in “freedom,” not necessarily as in “free beer.” Let’s take that analogy further:The _recipe_ for the beer is open and free, but the process of brewing, bottling, storing, distributing, marketing, and supporting that beer is not cost-less! So, some indie brewers might ask people to pay for the beer itself. Some might ask people to pay whatever they value that beer at—even $0 if they want!—and it helps support the indie brewers.

Even if someone else could use the recipe to make the same product, there is absolutely value in the actual creation of the end product, and the expertise involved in its creation. And you can be fairly sure that the person who wrote the recipe is the person who best knows how to make, bottle, and store the beer. So it is worth purchasing the beer from them!At the same time, if a new upstart came along, they have a rich world of beer recipes to start from, tweak on, and make their own.

Some might tell you that selling this beer—when anyone else could come in and make the very same beer from the same recipe—is foolish. And they might be right that it’s at least a little risky. They might tell you to instead sell “beer making consultation services.”And yeah, that might make you more money, but now you spend all day telling other people how to run their breweries instead of actually… making and selling beer, which is what you *want* to do!

Anyway, this thread was inspired by an old conversation on birdsite, but it is still relevant today. And I hope it becomes more relevant as we make it easier for the indie devs who are making free and open source software to get paid for that work.
