Say hello to Tally for Plausible, a rebrand of my Plausible app to better differentiate it from Plausible Analytics itself! The app supports:• Your dashboard from Plausible.io• Custom domains• A refreshed design• Cross-desktop light/dark style• A more app-like experience• Theoretically, phones!*Grab it now from Flathub:https://flathub.org/apps/details/com.cassidyjames.plausible#PlausibleAnalytics #GTK #GTK4 #GNOME #Adwaita #Flatpak*If you have a Linux phone and want to test Tally, I’d love to see what it looks like.

You might notice that Tally does NOT sport a unique icon (yet!). I might take a stab at it, but if you're a talented icon designer, I would love your help making a GNOME-styled tally counter icon with the Plausible color scheme. :)

@xerz should be, it builds for ARM64 and I believe Flathub enables that by default.

If you’re new around here on Android—or are just interested in a nice app—I recommend you check out @megalodon!It’s a nice, open source Mastodon app, based on the official one, that adds some quality of life features:• Color themes (including Material You)• Unlisted posts• Bookmarks• Lists• Translate (if your instance supports it)• Post language selection• Federated timeline• View image descriptions• Pinned posts• Follow hashtagshttps://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.joinmastodon.android.sk#meta #Android

Yet again someone on an iPhone shared photos of my kid with me and they come through as half a megapixel. Is this some default iOS setting to share garbage quality with apps?

@scottjenson @zak yeah in this case it has been both via iCloud and Google Photos. One was when they created and shared the album with me, one was when they added them to my shared album. In both cases, they share as literally a half megapixel.

I have decided to spin up a blaede.family Mastodon instance (via a hosting provider, I am no DevOps/sysadmin masochist). It is by its nature a tiny, inexpensive instance for my family and _maybe_ very close IRL friends. Basically, so I have a nice place for when a family member says, “I want to sign up for Mastodon, where should I start?”My question now is: should I migrate fully to it, away from this account?#meta

If I understand things correctly, a smaller server will have smaller federation. With the decent amount of followers and people I follow, is that actually a problem since that all comes with me if I migrate? In a way, I feel like that would really help the smaller server federate with more instances better right off the bat. Am I missing some downside, though?#meta

There is so much effort to get Android apps running on other platforms, but… can someone please work on getting Flatpak/GNOME apps running on Android—even if it requires root/a custom ROM/etc.?Realistically, I’m not going to be able to switch to a traditional Linux phone like PinePhone Pro or Librem 5 any time soon. But I would *love* to start dogfooding GNOME apps and my own apps on mobile.

I am once again asking for a straightforward way to run GNOME/GTK/Flatpak apps on Android. 😭There is this whole ecosystem of GNOME Flatpak apps on Flathub that I depend on and greatly miss when on Android. I just want to be able to easily install and use them here, too!I genuinely think this would be a much more effective way to further GNOME on mobile efforts than dedicated Linux phones today.

@alexm @tbernard …as an off-by-default clearly-labeled beta feature for those who want to customize a minimalist home screen. 🤷♂️You’ve always been able to make bad decisions (setting a terrible wallpaper, installing a garbage custom launcher, etc.), but I actually appreciate Google offering some ways for people to customize the look w/o it being total garbage. If it is opt in, the user is going to be more likely to know where their own apps are, and the implementation is done by app authors.

@alexm @tbernard unless you mean Google’s icons which are… so bad. 😅 Rainbow symbolics in a white circle.

The most profitable company in the history of humanity branding itself as caring about individual privacy has to be one of the most effective marketing dupes ever.https://gizmodo.com/apple-iphone-ipad-privacy-problems-data-gathering-1849855092

This does a better job at visualizing WHY exactly non-integer scaling is not ideal than I ever did; while it's written about macOS, much of this is true with Linux-based OSes, as well.https://bjango.com/articles/macexternaldisplays2/#HiDPI #Linux #macOS

This also exposes the reasoning for some of my decisions with Dippi; when first considering HiDPI at System76, we ended up using very similar logic to what Apple does for native DPI ranges on laptop and desktop computers. That's why Dippi infers the display type and changes the calculation as a result.https://cassidyjames.com/dippi#Dippi #Linux #HiDPI

I wonder if *one* of the incentives for Google giving out a VPN for Google One subscribers, Google Fi users, and now Google Pixel owners is that it makes it harder to block ads, e.g. with something like Pi-Hole.I’m genuinely happy to see traffic encrypted through a VPN becoming more the default, and I also don’t really believe Google will use it for ad targeting or anything due to its anonymity by design—but I feel like there may be more than just one-upping Apple’s privacy claims at play.

So many people are joining Mastodon and missing one crucial step: verifying your account! You might think, “I’m not important, why should I care?” Think about it as a way to protect anyone who follows you. Consider:1. Someone sets up an account claiming to be you, automatically grabbing real posts from somewhere else2. They get a bunch of followers3. They post, “really struggling this month, a little could go a long way” with a link to Cash AppHow would any followers know it was a scam?

The best way to protect yourself and those who follow you from being the target of that kind of scam—in addition to lots of other, even more nefarious attacks—is to verify your account with a URL of a website! If you don’t have a website, I’ll get to that, but let’s start here.https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/profile/#verificationBasically, add a special link to your Mastodon account on a known site that represents you, then put a link to THAT site in your Mastodon profile. It’ll show as a verified URL!
