@rain@Wolf480pl @bort @fribbledomThe problem, in my mind, is cross-project coordination. Everyone treats their project as if it were standalone and not part of a software ecosystem. That's fine for smaller projects, but larger ones need to coordinate more or provide reference parsers for their data.

@msh@staticsafe @GargronInteresting problem when you add in other fediverse platforms like Pleroma, Peertube and the like. I wonder if spam can propagate easily through the fediverse from one platform.

@liaizon Maybe on F-Droid's app database. I think if you wanted it to all stay offline, there would be a fairly large database of words and sounds to store. To be honest, I've never looked for something like that myself, but if I were, it would be F-Droid or nothing.

@schestowitz Is that really going to happen when money is such an important aspect of journalism? Right now a couple news companies are having problems with billionaires who like to say they have a newspaper but don't want to lose money over it.#news #journalism #money

@schestowitz I actually recall a few years back some discussion on papers going non-profit to escape the corporate world. The problem is that non-profits constantly need donations or they will die. Damned if you do, and damned if you don't#news #journalism #independent #nonprofit #money

@freemo I was going to ask the same question. I am going to guess it has to do with density. The fire reaction somehow fuses constituent elements together, forming a smaller, but more dense material.Of course, I don't really know, so it's just a guess.

@salixlucida Isn't this actionable? I know nothing about Iowa law, but this seems like something an attorney can sink some teeth into.

@freemo I got lazy and looked it up.I wouldn't have thought that molecules would actually be captured during the combustion process. I would have thought they would be destroyed due to the act of combustion.

@freemoThe atoms that go into a tree came from the surrounding environment(that is, air and soil and all the chemicals therein.)When a log burns, I'm guessing that the moisture within it turns to steam or internal gasses are released due to the combustion process. This pulls mass from the log into the air, giving a nice woody fragrance, but making the log lighter.Close?@stux @artilectzed

@HappyWizard Wait, this broke my brain for a bit..."Ontology" refers to the study of being, while "chauvinism" refers to an extreme sense of patriotism, nationalism, or superiority and glory. So... this book was accusing people of having an extreme sense of superiority in a particular theory of being? That's an interesting accusation. I don't think I've heard of that before.

@kline I don't know about FOSS alternatives beyond IRC and Jabber, but Discord, as I understand it, has privacy issues. I think they record a lot of user information and activity. At least, there were reports of that early on in its use. It might be worthwhile to investigate what information Discord records and stores before talking about any sensitive issues on the system.

@shebang I don't think it is the behavior of others so much as the framework for communication. Social media services have solved the problem of people connecting to each other, but not the problem of having meaningful connections. Message boards were superior to this, in my opinion. Having a relatively small population and someone making sure the threads didn't go off the rails made for a more constructive conversation.

@shebangI think it depends. I've seen good conversations happen when someone is there to keep posts on-topic and remind people to not attack each other. Sure, it can lead to groupthink if mods are on a power trip, but the alternative is what we have now, which is a "global conversation" devolving into a giant shoving match (ie. Twitter)

@alex The most interesting thing to me about the linked page is the list of new projects. I could be wrong, but the fact that new projects are being built on ActivityPub seems like a strong sign of positive momentum.
