Driving with 2 people costs $7 round trip in road fare plus $25B/yr from the stateTransit with 2 people costs ~$20 round trip in train fare plus $2B/yr from the stateTrain frequency and cost is this bad because of how little we invest in it

Transit fares are too damn high, and transit frequencies are too damn lowTrading off one for the other just adjusts which demographic benefits the most from a tiny morsel of fundsThe only sustainable solution is transit investment at the same scale as our investment in cars so we can have both affordable and frequent transit

And if we don't figure this out within the next decade our planet burns, so let's jump to it

@publius A lot of time the people in charge of transit agencies are trying to squeeze as much as they can out of a very small budget, and are left having to make hard choices like poor frequencies as better than dropping service entirelyI place the blame on elected officials who have decided to give transit agencies such a small budget to work worth in the first place

@publius that's a good point. The transit board members who ride transit are normal pretty good, the ones who don't ride transit have very little idea what they are doing

Wonder if we could get a highway fiscal responsibility proposition passed at the state level that required all highway funding to come from gas and vehicle taxes, and delayed capital projects until maintenance was fully funded from those taxes

@GreenFire don't think we could frame it in a way that both fiscal conservatives and liberals would like?

Our streets used to be shared spaces for neighbors until car companies invented a fake crime of "jaywalking" to give drivers passing through legal immunity to kill people who inconvenienced them

Cities attempted to fight back by declaring some streets for kids and off-limits to cars, but ultimately car companies won and we ceded exclusive rights to use our streets to them

Cars require violence to remain a viable option for transportationIf you remove the threat of violence then neighborhoods will reclaim our streets and thru traffic will be slowed to a haltWhat will AV companies do when their cars are blocked by kids playing basketball in front of their house? Will they let their trillion dollar business model fail, or will they start blaming the kids for getting run over when their cars are programmed not to stop for them?#WeekOfCone

It is unacceptable that Waymo and Cruise think they can enlist first responders as free labor to monitor their broken toysPart of knowing how to drive is knowing how to immediately follow verbal and visual directions of first responders in an emergency situationA driver, human or robot, should not be allowed on our public roads until they can handle emergency situationshttps://missionlocal.org/2023/08/sf-cops-firefighters-vent-prior-to-big-vote-on-driverless-car-expansion/

@simon dunno if it is safe enough to expose to users, but I know it is safer than eval in the sense that only certain arithmetic operations are available
