@rysiek @nickmurison The notion that the "decentralized nature of the 'fediverse' ... makes it vulnerable to break and crumble at any time" makes me suddenly rather worried that the Internet [1] could break and crumble any time... ;)[1] https://www.rand.org/about/history/baran.html

@aral That's biased against https://brands.town . After all, their server rule number 1 says "The only people allowed on this instance are corporations." One might suspect that you were denying corporations their humanity as individual human beings. Watch out for a cease-and-desist toot|publish|meow from brands.town's lawyers ...

@aral This is also the case for several #ActivityPub compatible parts of the Fediverse. Check in the "issue" lists for the packages' git repositories and upvote the priority? For the moment we should add this to a #FediverseFAQ + #MastodonFAQ :option (1) = copy URL into your instance's search feature and hit <enter>option (2) = browser:https://MYINSTANCEDOMAINNAME/authorize_interaction?uri=TOOTURLbut substitute for MYINSTANCEDOMAINNAME and TOOTURL (thanks: @tusooa)@pixelfed

@aral @thom Just to clarify @ new arrivals: Musk has not given his $US 44G to the Fediverse, and we don't have a centralised kitty to pay the developers who left the birdsite and "employ" them.Find ways to support the developers of #Pleroma, #Pixelfed and so on: provide money or comment usefully on #GitRepository issues (or at least upvote their priority) or propose #MergeRequests with the required features or provide detailed bug reports.Software is developed by people.

@tusooa @aral @pixelfed It would be good to collect together a list of the equivalent of option (2) for #PeerTube , #PixelFed , #Pleroma, #Mobilizon and the others. "Look and click" will be needed for the wider masses (e.g. if Musk buys Instagram), but solutions for techy people (people who know what a string of characters is) would be good.Maybe #FediverseHowToFollow could be a good hashtag to help collect these?

@specktator_ @bad_immigrantThe sources overwhelmingly agree that RU invaded UA in 2014, and launched a full-scale invasion on 24 Feb 2022.Priority: RU withdrawal from UA.What you 2 could, hopefully, agree on is that the proposed special tribunal for the #CrimeOfAgression [1] should deal with *both* the US invasion of Iraq [2] *and* the RU invasion of UA.Which organisations are campaigning for this?@AI_GhanaGermany @amnestynantes[1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_international_tribunal_for_the_crime_of_aggression_%28Russian_invasion_of_Ukraine%29[2] https://theintercept.com/2023/03/15/iraq-war-where-are-they-now

@kravietz It's inaccurate to say that "the US ... believe[s] in international law and rules-based order rather than brute force". It's rather that massive grassroots organising, world wide protests (15 Feb 2003), better information distribution and legal risks (International Criminal Court) have made it politically a lot more risky for the US to use brute force in violation of international law in the last few decades. The bully is constrained, not reformed.@bad_immigrant @specktator_

@Sheril In your dissertation, I recommend that you comment on the contradiction between secret text editing by a politician's staff versus the radical transparency of the Internet epoch. The Pirate Parties (PP) [1] are a real-world example of national-level political decision-making that claims to be fully transparent (like the Usenet, Debian, Wikipedia). The biggest success so far is the Czech PP [2].[1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pirate_Party[2] https://www.pirati.cz@mikulas_peksa @jamesmarshall

Finally got around to migrating all my non-trivial git repositories from MS/GH to #Codeberg - just before the 2FA-MS/GH-probably-will-require-your-telephone-number deadline. :) I'm keeping my account there since some communication [1] with #TyrannyOfConvenience people can still be useful.@Gargron 's branch of Mastodon still has issue 22572 of #GiveUpGitHub migration unsolved [2].#GAFAM #decentralization[1] https://github.com/broukema/transition_off_github[2] https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/22572

@tiago @onisillos This is a #TyrannyOfConvenience issue.Codes of conduct have started to become close to ubiquitous in academic conferences (my impression in astro). If we could get software ethics into codes of conduct - making it clear that the choice of software and servers is ethically significant for the role of academic enquiry as part of the wider community, then #TyrannyOfConvenience arguments could start to become as unacceptable as bigotry.@academicchatter

Are there any #mattermost clients apart from "the mattermost client" [1] provided by Mattermost itself? Since Mattermost is apparently Expat, #AGPLv3 and #ApacheLicense2_0 for various parts [2], it would be surprising if there are no clients done independently.[1] https://www.restack.io/docs/mattermost-knowledge-mattermost-client-overview[2] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mattermost

@rolle @realcaseyrollins Building freedom takes time and effort. Keep working on things like Fediverse governance [1] and sooner or later there'll be new mass arrivals in the free world. And it does look like there's a bump up of about half a million in the last week [2] - though there was spam that might bias those estimates.[1] https://fediverse-governance.github.io[2] https://fediverse.observer/dailystats

@debian has stopped using its Twitter account [1]. I like the comment from Andreas Tille [2]:"I believe it is crucial for us to be the first major Linux distribution to move away from X, rather than the last to follow others. This is particularly important for #Debian to maintain its leadership in addressing ethical questions."#HelloQuitX #HelloQuitteX #DebianSocialContract[1] https://lists.debian.org/debian-publicity/2025/01/msg00067.html[2] https://lists.debian.org/debian-publicity/2025/01/msg00033.html

@UODO Do you have any update to [1] from 3 Oct 2024, which describes the GPDR violation by the Polish government ,,zaufany podpis" system? The violation is especially bad for electronically signed documents that are published on public web pages. It is even worse when electronically signed documents are published as "official" documents on web pages: administrators don't understand that private info published on the web is a much worse violation than local storage.[1] https://www.uodo.gov.pl/pl/138/3373

1/3Key hypothesis more or less stated at today's #Decidim Association #bbb meeting [1]:Hypothesis: Much of the power of the #TrumpMuskRegime + recently elected neo-fascist parties comes from #ImplicitFeudalism in online governance [2], related to the #TyrannyOfStructurelessness [3][4]. Exceptions in #FOSS are #Debian + #Wikipedia [2].

2/3Governance concept for online communities [5]:- exit (e.g. #HelloQuitX or fork a FOSS project)vs- #AffectiveVoice - consultation in #DecisionMakingvs- #EffectiveVoice - participation in #DecisionMakingCorollary: providing the conceptual tools and empirical evidence about how online governance can evolve away from implicit feudalism and towards effective voice could have *huge* local and global sociopolitical benefits. Cyberspace has real sociopolitical power in the 2020s.

@jzC'est le #Fédhiver par rapport au #Fédivert. Avec les tirets : Féd-hiver vs Fédi-vert .For English speakers: It's the Fed-hiver (Fed(i) winter in French), to be contrasted to Fedi-vert (Fedi green in French). These are perfect homophones - the 'h' and 't' are silent.#Fedhiver #Fedivert
