I have not used Google search for a long time, but people who do tell me it is headed in some strange directions with more and more of the top results belonging to Google properties https://themarkup.org/google-the-giant/2020/07/28/how-we-analyzed-google-search-results-web-assay-parsing-tool #stateOfTheWeb

A horde of 4 tons of gold and silver in an underwater cache near Mir Zakah found 1700 years later and re-buried in a scholarly book review and probably the tax-free zone at a Swiss airport ... all it needs is a #dragon https://www.persee.fr/doc/topoi_1161-9473_2013_num_18_2_2513 #ancient

Wow ... Patreon just borrowed another USD $90 million against equity. I do not understand their business model at all but they sure seem to be in a spiral of borrowing money to pay the interest on the last money they borrowed and splashing it around to look like they are doing something with it. #patreon

Do any of you live in places where all the shops are open but librarians are quarantining books / not accepting donations / not letting the public in to the building? It feels like another case where the people who run institutions don't believe in their missions but are just going through the forms.

Since I do not drive and most of Canada is no longer served by passenger trains or intercity buses, this is a serious concern.

@22 feeds / timelines also let prolific posters drown out occasional thoughtful posters. If a blogger starts posting a hot take every day I can start skimming the first paragraph or checking less often.

When I upgraded from Win 7 to Ubuntu, somehow some albums failed to copy from my old iTunes music folder (and a few others did not copy) ... any advice on how to solve this now that iTunes has mostly gone away? I don't have my old Windows boxes with me in exile but I do have my iTunes account and access to a Windows box.

When activists tried to stop white supremacist groups from using Mastercard, the company responded: "If there is a lawful transaction, our view is, this is a private transaction that is being taken place within the framework of laws ... If it is lawful, then we need to respect that transaction. If it is something that is sort of against the tide of society, it’s the society to rise up and change the law, and then we can move on this." https://seekingalpha.com/article/4272059-mastercard-incorporated-ma-2019-annual-stockholder-meeting-conference-transcript

Switter, the sex-worker friendly fediverse service, is closing due to hostile legislative changes https://assemblyfour.com/switter-public-statement Sex workers (and sexy writing and speech) are canaries in the coal mine for incoming authoritarianism in general.

@TheAntichrist I would assume that an Anglo business considered hosting in Canada but see their site. I am cross-posting not speaking for them.

@TheAntichrist and that is your privilege, but one of my policies is "no backseat driving." Assemblyfour are kind of vague about issues outside of Australia ("made it impossible for us to appropriately and ethically maintain compliance for over 430,000+ users" may be a hint) but I'm not going to sit in my office chair and pronounce that they must be overlooking something obvious

@dentangle could you tell me what this is in response to? I am very concerned by the collapse of Mozilla's self-belief over the past decade.

@koherecoWatchdog @maloki one of my basic principles is that donations are about the donor's comfort and preferences not my own. Just like political organizing or any other "call to action." Monthly payments also reduce transaction costs (it costs time and concentration to remember when you last donated to your favourite webcomic and how much).

Oh wow: ancient historian and very popular blogger Bret Deveraux just realized that birdsite does not actually help his writing on the open web or on paper reach audiences - if he wants Birdsite people to read it, it has to be a thread https://nitter.eu/BretDevereaux/status/1512082436150071304#m 1/n

Part of becoming an adult is understanding that conservatives are just as ambitious to change society as leftists, they just frame that change in terms of an imagined past instead of an imagined future. (There are a few true conservatives among all the reactionaries and the revolutionaries, but they are not very influential). US scholar Tanner Greer has grown up enough to notice that this was true of the Taliban https://scholars-stage.org/learning-from-our-defeat-the-madrassas-and-the-modern/ #politicalScience #afghanistan

@Archivist I wish I had energy to read more books on Afghanistan by people who have lived there outside a NATO base and speak local languages such as Sarah Chayes https://www.sarahchayes.org/ I have a few friends from there who came to Europe overland.

@aral to me the fundamental problem is the concentration of power not whether its run by a meat-powered proffit-maximizing algorithm ("joint-stock corporation") or one dude with a knack for self-promotion who people bond around hating
