@c0deweaver So for context - my kids are at a very small international school with no IT staff (I don't work there... though I wish I did). I was a cybersecurity analyst in the states before I moved here (to Korea) for my husband's job. Now I'm just unemployed and finishing my Master's until we return home. I have no resources for these kids to use other than the laptops that the school provides each them, and my own digital devices.

My husband told me he had a surprise for me and then brought me to the Fukuoka Gundam. This is why I married him.

To be honest, if there was a zombie apocalypse I think I'd rather just become zombified early on rather than live in constant fear of being eaten. Just one girl's opinion.

I had a conversation with my boss yesterday and I was mentioning that after taking Project Management I'm glad to understand it better, but also glad to realize I will always want to be on the "doing" side of tech, not the "managing" side. He told me that as VP of IT he desperately misses actually doing the tech work and does next to none these days. I always saw my goals as leading toward being a CISO someday, but now I'm not sure I want that... CISOs of Mastodon, what are your thoughts? Do you get to do any technical work or is it mostly management? Do you like where you landed? Is being a CISO fun? #informationsecurity #informationtechnology #cybersecurity #cybersecurityprofessional #CISO

As an aside... I recognize that any job is not ALWAYS fun. But for the most part, my job as a cybersecurity analyst was a lot of fun and I enjoyed going to work most days. I felt the same as a Sysadmin for the most part. So, when I say "is it fun" I'm talking like... 70/30 is it "mostly" fun.

@seb every quarter I would have to present our risk remediations/mitigations/acceptance to our c-suite and I enjoyed taking highly technical concepts and phrasing them in a way that non-technical staff could understand. Threat and risk management is my favorite.

I built a desktop about nine years ago that ended up being used as our family "media center" i.e we just use it with our huge TV to watch Netflix and Disney+ because we don't have regular TV or whatever. My husband told me yesterday it "didn't meet the requirements" to be upgraded to Windows 11 and I had to audacity to be offended by that as if an nine year old desktop isn't ancient. Lol.

I just recovered an old photo storage account from my college days and discovered these gems I made and sent to the team back when I was suffering every day as a call center tech rep for Westinghouse Digital...

Leaving my parents ended on this note: my mom told me she bribed my brother (43) to come to northern Maine for my daughterās tenth birthday by telling him he could go hiking during the party. She said this was the ācarrotā she dangled to get him to come. I said, (not yelled or snapped mind you - simply said) āthatās a little ridiculous since he wonāt have a chance to see us again for at least another year, youād think heād want to come.ā She interrupted me, shut me down and told me ādonāt startā and to take it for what it is, and not to be ālike thatā. Iām not allowed to have a single feeling in this house. I grew up being shut down anytime I felt sad, frustrated or upset about anything big or small. Iām almost 40 and that hasnāt changed. If I express the slightest irritation Iām treated as if Iām being an ill-behaved child. I will not raise my kids to believe they arenāt allowed to feel their feelings. This ends with me. Coincidentally my family name also ended when I got married, and Iām glad.

@Maiko_1820 I am also lucky enough to have wonderful in-laws and I am much closer with them than my own family. Youāre definitely not alone in this! It took me many years to understand how my parents treatment of me impacted who I am as a person and to work on undoing the damage. It is long lasting, unfortunately.

As if Iāve arrived home and our internet is out. After a fifteen hour flight, a forty minute taxi ride, a two and a half hour bullet train ride, another forty minute taxi ride⦠this is not the welcome home I need right now š

@seb sadly the issue appears to be on the other side of the router, and since we are in a huge apartment complex we couldnāt do anything but tell our landlord who asked us (two IT professionals) to reboot the router. š

My daughter told me today that I'm cool. That the music I listen to is always cool. That my drawings are cool. That everything about me is cool. As someone who spent her entire childhood being called a dorky nerdy loser, and experienced severe bully all through middle and high school, I never even know what to say when my daughter tells me this. I still feel like the same socially awkward, introverted, worried dork I always was. Tonight she told me "even the TV shows you watch are cool!" I was watching Iron Chef.
